Also think about who we had on the pitch. Irne is many things,
but a lineout stealer he is not, and Steph isn't particularly
noted for it. Dino is, and we have really missed him since his
shoulder injury. A lot of the lineouts looked contestable, but
without a specialist spoiler and facing a decent rolling maul I
think Quins may have decided that discretion was the better part
of valour in that aspect of the game.

Being a nause, I love a stat. You may have seen that Russ Petty
has put out a load of stats around each team's attack and
defence over the last 3 seasons. It's regular season only and I
think it makes for interesting reading around Quins' defence.
The difference between last season and this is just one point
per game. That may be heavily skewed by the last few matches but
even with the Flannery defence of last season, you still a
negative points difference: -1 last season v -2 for this season.
Likewise, last season you conceded 3.8 tries per game. This
season it was 3.9. By contrast, in 2021/22 you were conceding 3
tries per game.

Dino has been a big miss. I hope he comes back in good nick as
he had really established himself and was effective all round
the park.
Launch, Lewies and Herbst bring power and nous, but none of them
are particularly good lineout forward or particularly mobile.
Hammond is OK, but our best jumpers (by a distance) are Dino and
Kenningham. Having both back will make a significant difference
in that department and elsewhere.

Dino is incredibly athletic for a bloke of his size.

He strikes me as very similar to Itoje in his style of play. Not
quite at that level, but very effective for what we are likely
to be paying him.

Very much agree with this comparison - and I'd venture to
suggest Dino has often put together periods of much better
performance than Maro... the issue is his injury record. Hope he
can put together a full season for us in 24-25.

Still haven't seen this match yet but the stats made for ugly
reading when I was following online. Baxter getting pinged off
the park. Green and Andre missing tackles for fun. Lynagh having
a mare. Beard hadn't touched the ball after half an hour.
Bristol pack ran riot and only CCS and Dombrandt were able to
make a dent.
Hugely disappointing to fall away that badly in the second half
but it seems like the writing was on the wall in the first half
anyway.
Real shame that a couple of players ended their Quins careers
like this.
So, onwards to next season. Defence coach an absolute priority.

For the backline - I would say:
Smith tried too hard and didn't gel with the other guys
Louis - as usual - okay going forward + poor going backwards (we
really miss David)
Andre - not match fit
Northmore - okay
Beard - made one huge tackle - but, I am not sure he knew what
his role was.
Green - I thought that he played out of his skin
I was surprised that Collier struggled at the scrum
Generally - it was a good game to watch though.
Bristol were good.
We did that really annoying thing of just giving away a try
again. Basically CCS passed the ball to no-one at all and Gabby
was able to just scoop up the ball and walk in for a try.)
We should really have gone in at half time roughly even on the
scoresheet or ahead. I think that both Andre and Finn messed up
virtually on the tryline.
But - clearly we ran out of steam midway through the second half
and then it was just one way traffic.

Re: the scrum, I think Quins just painted the wrong picture
early on and it got in the ref's head who the offending side
were.
There were at least a couple where Sinckler looked to me to be
deliberately pulling the scrum down and getting away with it,
and Genge hinged quite a bit. I always think it's a bit telling
when the scrum tends to stay up on one side's put in and go down
on the others' but clearly Saturday's officials didn't agree.
That said, overall the pack looked tired and Quins just didn't
seem to have much left in the tank. My guess is that several
players were playing through injuries due to more serious
injuries elsewhere in the squad, and at this stage of the season
that can make a decisive difference.
