Out with a whimper.
The unknown is how much our European campaign has impacted us
but finishing 6th in the manner we have incredibly
disappointing. Worst of all Bristol came and beat us with what
is (supposedly) our key strength, flair and attack.
Right now: it is one of, if not the, highest season ticket
prices in the league, two years out of the playoffs, cannot
replace our best player in Andre, all feeling pretty poor and
directionless. I’m not sure the European campaign papers over
that for me.

Have you heard of Marcus Smith? Tyrone Green? Cadan Murley? Alex
Dombrandt? Chandler Cunningham-South? etc etc

Well Cunningham South would be an interesting option at centre
but not sure it would work…

Today’s performance was a bit too common a sight second half of
this season. Malins ran some superb lines and the general tempo
and organisation or Brizzle’s attack was excellent, as it has
been the last couple of months for them.
The less said about our defence the better. It was absolutely
awful today. You can’t concede that many points so consistently
and expect to win anything. Can’t say I felt we deserved the
playoffs this year based on how bad our defence has been for a
prolonged period. Defence coach is an absolute priority over the
summer. I love the way we play but too many times we’ve veered
from attacking to mindless kamikaze.
That said it’s not all bad. We’ve had some proper performances
in Europe this year and the away wins in Paris and Bordeaux will
live long in the memory. Glasgow, Ulster and Sale at home were
also some fantastic performances that were well worth the
admission money. CCS is one heck of a player and I like to think
Dino and Kenners will be fit for more of next season to provide
quality support in the pack.
Best of luck to Will, Andre, Louis and the others on their way!
You’ll be missed.
Hope Saints win the playoffs and on to next season we go.

Quite simple our first up defence is terrible. People keep
quoting how bad it is since JFs departure and I do agree it was
better but not great by any means. We need to do a bit of a
Saints build. Get the squad bulked over summer, bring a defence
coach in and concentrate on shutting the gate. Great attack will
come off the back of it.
From the SS today the gap in our midfield was woeful and Malins
just walked through it.
I think a Prem semi would have been a game too far.
Got to Champs semi, finished 6th so not all that bad overall
considering one win puts you in the playoffs.

Yeah I agree with this. The group this year wasn't far away, for
instance:
- Deeper than ever before in Europe.
- Genuine quality at most, if not all, positions. CCS,
Dombrandt, Will Evans, Care, Smith, Esterhuizen, Murley, Green
often worth the entrance fee alone on their day, and all but one
of those are back.
- More attacking try bonus points than anyone else (11) and
generally good in the red zone
- Most efficient scrum in the league (today a bit of a blip
albeit)
- Lineout issues from last year essentially completely fixed,
regardless of who starts.
- Can't be faulted for entertainment the vast majority of the
time.
Yet, had a 50-50 season and fell away down the stretch when
defence perhaps wasn't being drilled in the same way and/or we
leant into attack too much. Only the players will know, and they
*will* know.
As the player pool in the 10 clubs has condensed with the loss
of 3 clubs in quick succession, the standard is through the roof
(and pretty even) regardless of cap. You don't have to be off by
much to be on the outside looking in, and carrying a
statistically bottom two defence for half of the season is more
than enough to keep you out. The review starts and ends there.

The Kid, are you sure about the lineout? It hasn't looked very
solid to me.

I don’t think moving Marcus to fullback works. As soon as we’ve
done this it makes things worse, this week and last. Put JEV at
centre because Marcus goes off round the pitch trying to make
things happen leaving us exposed. it’s not good that for the
second week running we’ve dropped off badly in the second half.
Beard would be much better on the wing or in fact anybody that
doesn’t mean Tyrone gets moved there. None of it mattered in the
end because of Sales win so I would imagine that Bristol
supporters will be more upset than us. Bring on next season.

Agreed on Marcus not being a 15. Absolutely wrecks our shape.
