Harlequins have named their matchday squad for Saturday’s
Gallagher Premiership fixture against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy
Park (KO 17:30 – live on TNT Sports).
The squad features four changes to the starting XV, with the
return of experienced duo Joe Marler and James Chisholm,
alongside the in-form Will Porter and versatile Oscar Beard.
Amongst the Impact Players, Fin Baxter makes his 50th Harlequins
appearance, with flanker Jack Kenningham returning to the squad
after seven months sidelined with injury.
Up-front, Joe Marler and Will Collier pack down alongside hooker
Jack Walker. Irne Herbst and Stephan Lewies maintain their
partnership at second-row, with Chandler Cunningham South and
James Chisholm on the flanks. Alex Dombrandt continues at number
eight.
Will Porter and Marcus Smith form the halves combination, with
Luke Northmore replacing the injured Andre Esterhuizen and Oscar
Beard returning at outside centre. Cadan Murley and Louis Lynagh
continue their consecutive run of matches on the wing, with
Tyrone Green at fullback.
The Impact Players feature a 6-2 split with front-row
replacements Sam Riley, Fin Baxter and Dillon Lewis named
alongside second-row George Hammond, and flankers Jack
Kenningham and Will Evans. Danny Care and Jarrod Evans provide
experience and cover in the backs.
Director of Rugby Billy Millard commented: “It’s great to be
back in Premiership action this week. We know it will be a tough

Rob Baxter has not made any changes to his Chiefs starting
line-up to host Harlequins at Sandy Park in Round 17 of the
Gallagher Premiership this Saturday evening, May 11.
Chiefs welcome the Londoners to Devon for their last home game
of the 2023/24 season with the match having an important impact
on the top four ambitions of both clubs.
The front row features loosehead Scott Sio, hooker Jack Yeandle
and tighthead Marcus Street all packing down together.
Irishman Jack Dunne partners Welshman, and captain, Dafydd
Jenkins in the second row. With the hard-hitting back row of
Ethan Roots and Jacques Vermeulen on the flanks with Greg
Fisilau at eight.
Tom Cairns and Harvey Skinner are the half-back duo with Henry
Slade and Joe Hawkins forming the centre partnership.
In the back three, scorer of April’s try of the month Dan John
is at full-back with Olly Woodburn and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso
running the wings.
Director of Rugby Rob Baxter says his Chiefs squad will be going
into the encounter with a positive mindset and treating this
competitive run-in as another early step on the journey of this
young and developing squad.
“The last game of the season will be exciting if we go well this
weekend. That’s obviously going to be a big challenge as
Harlequins are playing some very good rugby but that said, we
win, and we could potentially swap places with them.
“We’re not far apart in terms of performance levels in the
Premiership, so we have to make sure that we show that the
season has been very important for us in our growth and
development.
“This weekend will be interesting as Quins are facing the same
scenario we did going in to our Bath game a couple of weeks ago
in that they played last Sunday so had a short turnaround for
coming back into Premiership action.
“I think the key will be knowing that when you face Harlequins
you have to be good, but you have to stay good. You have to hold
your performance because the minute you think you can manage the
scoreboard or the clock then they’re absolutely lethal.
“We’ve talked a fair bit about that. We want to make the game
about us while Quins will want to make it about them but that’s
always the overriding factor on who wins games of rugby. I do
think we’re progressing and we’re moving forward as a group, so
this is a great opportunity for us to show that again.”
On the bench Max Norey, Billy Keast and Ehren Painter form the
replacement front row. For the second week, it’s an
all-international duo that cover the second and back-row with
Wales’ Christ Tshiunza and Italy’s Ross Vintcent.
Fresh from his injury return and news of his re-signing, scrum
half Niall Armstrong is named alongside Will Haydon-Wood and
Zack Wimbush as cover for the backs.

15 Dan John

That looks like a horses for courses selection against Exeter's
power. Hold them out up front and open it up in the last 20. A
bit worrying not to have Andre (hope he's back soon) but a
pleasant surprise to see Kenningham back.
I hope the ref doesn't allow them to dive into the rucks...

Agreed about Esterhuizen, I hope it's not serious and we haven't
seen his last performance in the quarters. It also impacts on
Northmore, as I don't think he is as effective at 12.
Great to see Kenningham back though. Having him and WEv
available to bring on in the second half as Exeter are tiring is
an exciting prospect.

That's a strong front row, solid second row, and a back row with
plenty of heft and aggression. Looks like we're taking the fight
to them.
Backs look a tad disjointed, but if it all clicks then we should
be fine.

Good to see Evans getting a rest and looking forward to seeing
Kenningham back.
Northmore runs great lines from 13, but I'm less so sure about
him at 12. It's interesting Lennox isn't selected at all and
he's not injured, so clearly he appears not to be overly
trusted, which then leads to the question of next season, as I
hope the plan isn't just to shoehorn Luke there and hope for the
best.

It may be that they've been working on Luke as a 12 during his
recovery and want to see how he goes there. It's clear that
there's been a lot of skills development going on with players
before their return (see Porter) so we may see a different
Northmore.
Also, Kenningham has supposedly bulked up and worked on his
carrying, which could be very interesting to see.

Calculated risk team which could see EvansJ to 12, Northmore to
13 and Beard to back 3 in case of emergency.

as above, hope Andre's is only a minor injury - not a great
time to lose his carrying prowess - Riley for Walker would have
been preferred..
