I'm sure the Dickson family has great respect and appreciation
of both quins and saints, with Lee playing 250+ games at saints.
Must be quite a few years now since Karl last played for quins.

In fairness to Karl he did consult the other officials and no
one made a case for it. If the bias agenda was correct you'd
have expected him to dismiss an official making a case.
Ultimately, he is just a fairly poor ref who never seems far
from a gaff or contreversery after getting key things wrong at
key times overall.

He’s not really a poor ref. He may not be the best in the world,
and I’m not sure he’s international standard, but I think what
he does badly/worse than others is communication. Other referees
miss similar things, or as many things, but then explain what’s
happening or their thought process. I don’t think Karl does this
very effectively, so you end up thinking WTF all the time.

This is weird... I think I find myself agreeing with you?

I don't really think he's a poor ref. I think he gets grief
because he's a former player who was fast tracked, so people
expect him to be worse than the others. I think he lets the game
flow when he can.
I watched the first half back last night. Their disallowed try
was very harsh, but the tmo called it, not him. Then again,
their first try shouldn't have stood, so it evens out

Presumably the TMOs and assistant refs are also poor?

Yeah - I re-watched the game.
Decisions were generally fine in the 1st half.
The forward pass was definitely forward - but, I can understand
why they didn't look at it. Either way, it would have needed a
TMO intervention. There is no way that KD would have seen it.
(You can't see the direction of the guys hands in the replay.)
As for the disallowed try, KD said that it came off the boot.
The TMO overruled and said that it was a knock-on. Personally, I
think that a knock-on was a fair call.
I thought that the Lynagh yellow was a little harsh as the AR
said that LL had tried to catch the ball with 2 hands. But KD
overruled.
Saints did have a habit of laying on the wrong side of the ruck
rather a lot. KD could have pinged them a bit more for it.
In the 2nd half, there were a few blips.
E.g. holding back Louis and the Lawes not holding his own
body-weight bit.
The Care non-yellow card seems to be correct and he was pretty
clear that KD thought that the only infringement was the push.
It was pretty clear in the ground that this was what he was
signalling. He spoke at length to the other ARs and the TMO who
did all agree with the interpretation of what happened.
There was one case where one of our players was taken in the
air. Different day and different ref, this may have been looked
at. But the TMO didn't mention it.
So, I think KD was largely okay (yeah, he missed a few things -
but all refs do). If there is any complaint, then it should be
levelled at the TMO.

You don't get to ref at his level unless you're doing things
consistently well in the eyes of the ref managers, and getting
reasonably positive feedback from coaches. I have said before
that I suspect Karl's communications and decision-making are
aligned to what the players need to hear, because of his own
playing experience. What he's less good at is awareness of where
the crowd is at and communicating his decisions to them. Nige
and Wazza were both excellent at (though not without controversy
on occasion) while also being a notch higher on their technical
decisions.
Anyway, what's past is past and ref officialdom clearly felt
that he did the right thing over the second DC incident, which
was critical in the context of the game in a way that the others
weren't.

So after two days of potentially libellous abuse Dickson turns
out to have been err…correct.
The crowd round me were not the slightest interested in the game
so I am not sure explaining the rules would have made much
difference. They all seemed to have a good time though.
My memory will be of a very good game by two entertaining sides.
I thought at half time Saints would win but they seemed a bit
off and inaccurate and we had more flair and enterprise.
I think Dickson’s “let the game flow” approach contributed to
the spectacle. You can pick marginal decisions out of any game.
