I used to think he was good but he seems lost in showbiz now and
makes the game about him a lot, assume he’ll grow out of it like
       Barnes.
As to the above, it would all be fine other than the febrile
social media atmosphere at the moment around rugby etc etc - so
why risk making him a bigger target.
It would be just as easy not to pick him for this one. But then
maybe you’re giving into the mob.
       So who knows…
Either way don’t like him as a ref at the moment.

So, it seems it is a fair topic.. certainly according to the
       Saints board.

The points they raise is what I was trying to get across.
Essentially in the scenario Saints concede any "dubious"
penalties costing them a game, or a contested card, it will just
create more ill-feeling to the game than what was really needed,
so its best to avoid it.

Nowadays, it’s expected that refs for France games speak some
French. Dickson was even recently held up as an example of
old-fashioned thinking when he reffed the Toulouse v Racing game
       completely in English.
To the best of my knowledge, the first ref to speak French in
France test matches was Alain Rolland. This was widely seen as a
good idea so he could ref bilingually.
Officially of course, he was Irish but I can’t help but feel he
may have had some affinity to France.

People have a go at the ref, but in reality, there is a team of
refs for the game. Quite often, scrum penalties and offsides are
called by the assistant refs. If the ref misses something
obvious on the pitch, then in reality the other 3 refs should
also be criticised for missing it too.
So, Are we saying that Karl shouldn't be one of the 4 refs for
any game that involves Quins or Saints (or Bedford Blues). That
really cuts down on his employment prospects - after all, there
are only 5 games per weekend.
And - what will we do if Chris Ashton ever picks up a whistle?
In Karl's specific case - Karl could quite easily bear a grudge
with Quins for making him play 2nd fiddle to Care even though he
was, according to Co'S one of the best 5 SHs in the country.

Everyone understands your "points" but why now? Or did you bring
all this up last time he reffed us?

As it goes, Barnes is a Glos fan, he's from the Forest of Dean.

He's reffed us 3 times. Weve lost 2 of them

Thanks. I did eventually find that info about an hour ago on
rugby database - never seen the site before. It appears to have
his entire refereeing career on there!

...or feel indebted to us for picking him from the Championship
and giving him a Premiership career.
This is a bit of a non-issue, isn't it? Most refs have some sort
of connection to various teams if you look hard enough. Wayne
Barnes lives within walking distance of the Stoop IIRC and used
to be employed by us to run games in training and provide
feedback, yet he got to referee both of our Prem Finals and
       Bristanbul.
From the point of view of the authorities, whatever we think of
Karl he's clearly highly rated by the ref managers, and that
also presumably means that the teams and coaches rate him. I
think that may well be because he sees the game the way the
players do, having been a player himself for so long.
I also suspect that there's a deliberate policy of assigning the
refs of controversial games to referee the same teams again,
perhaps in the hope that the more recent game will offset the
memory of the earlier one. Sometimes it works: Barnes refereed
France v NZ on a regular basis post 2007, without much fuss. And
sometimes it doesn't: Steve Walsh continued to be assigned
England games on regular basis post 2003, and continued to make
highyl controversial decisions that rarely seemed to favour
       England.

And Karl has reffed Saints 10 times and given them the game 7
       times.
He clearly has a pro-Saints bias.
       We are doomed !!!
       :-)
