Sadly, I don't think it's about the individual games but the
total number of eyeballs across the season. The problem for
rugby is that although the audience is generally fairly
affluent, it's also a fairly self-contained group.
There are some stats here that are quite interesting:

55% of people watch soccer on the tv compared to 16% for rugby.

Yeah - I get that, but, you constantly see adverts for the big
brand clubs - e.g. Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc. I am
sure that these clubs attract tons of viewers for games both in
England and overseas and so, quite rightly get good TV money.
But, I don't think that applies so much to teams such as QPR. I
remember travelling round small villages in Kenya a number of
years ago. You would often see kids wearing Man U shirts, but
rarely wearing QPR shirts.
(I have nothing against QPR - I just picked them as they are
also a club in a big city congested with sports teams.)
So, my point is that I think that of the 55% that watch soccer,
most watch the Premier league and fewer watch the EFL.
If the split of viewers was something like:
85% watch Premier league
7.5% watch Premier league + EFL
7.5% watch EFL
- then, you could argue that the TV rights for rugby should
match the EFL.

I found this from last season sometimes, the largest viewing
figures for games was around 600k
I am sure that some Premiership rugby games get more viewers
(but I couldn't find any numbers.)

I thought premiership games were about 350k.
Anyway, that's not the point. With all due respect, what you
think should be the situation isn't necessarily what it is; but
I bet Sky, TNT etc. are well aware of the viewing figures and
projected advertising revenue. It's their money.

I think the biggest game last year was 597k

The TV companies need to generate more in advertising revenue
than the cost to make the program.
The advertising revenue depends on the number and type of
viewers.
If you attract richer viewers, it does open up some products -
like wealth management.
But if you are selling cola, or even beer, you are much more
interested in numbers.

It might - but I suspect they have analysis of how many games
they can show before they start splitting the audience rather
than building it.

If only we had a specialist company like CVC to negotiate a big
bucks TV deal for the premiership . . .
