They really don't.
Evans is an out and out seven who is absolutely top end when it
comes to winning turnovers. He has a point of difference that
makes him stand out, something Wray never had. And, as the
article makes clear, and is clear for anyone who has watched him
more than twice in the last year, he has really improved both
his tackling and his work in attack. Hence the topic.
But well done for suggesting if he adds more to his game he will
add more strings to his bow. It's that sort of top tier incisive
analysis that really separates you from the rest of us. Have you
considered going pro and writing for Planet Rugby?

Many people consider being able to play 6, 7 and 8 a significant
'point of difference' but obviously you don't. A shame really as
it's that lack of ability that will likely stop Evans getting
capped.

Nobody thinks that, because being able to play across the back
row to a reasonable but sub-specialist standard isn't anything
to write home about, unlike being one of the two best fetchers
of recent times in the league. Jackson Wray isn't Ben Earl or
Tom Curry or Jack Willis.
What will stop Evans getting capped is the fact that England
would rather have other strengths in their 7s, who are all still
pretty good over the ball, and that is absolutely fine. This
isn't a thread about him being unfairly overlooked by England.
It's a thread about his qualities and improvement being
recognised.
I don't know why you've spent your Friday night on the Quins
board but yet again it's been a showcase of your perception and
intellectual rigour, such as they are.

Wray played at 6, 7 and 8 to a standard that saw him play over
300 times for a team that won 5 Premierships and 3 European cups
during his tenure. Given you think Saracens could just recruit
any backrower they wanted - presumably including specialists in
all 3 positions instead - then it doesn't take too much
'perception or intellectual rigour' to ask the question why he
was overlooked by England, especially as a no.20. Marcus Smith
has had to bolt on skills as a 15 to play for England and Evans
will need to similarly develop his offering in order to make the
step up although as Wray showed, that's still not always enough.

7am eh. Just normal stuff.
Wray never had a hope of playing for England because despite the
flexibility that saw him play in so many games for Saracens
across the back row, he was never good enough at any single one
of them to be considered for England ahead of specialists - and
he was not the sort of player who could bring real impact off
the bench, either. There was nothing he did better than anyone
else, and the players he would have had to get past to play for
England all had strengths far beyond his.
Evans may be a single position player, of which there are many
in international rugby, but the point is that he is undeniably
one of the very best jackallers around, which makes him stand
out and is a very useful attribute indeed. Given he's improved
both the quality and the volume of his tackling and is more
involved in attack, the article talking about his international
credentials is entirely fair.
But no one expects him to play for England because despite being
better over the ball than any other available player, due to his
size he is worse than the other options as a heavy carrier and
body smasher, and not tall enough to be a lineout option. And
all of them are at worst competent ball thieves themselves. So
it makes perfect sense that he will continue to miss out,
despite his very obvious qualities. But if he did get picked,
he'd bring a top level breakdown threat with him, and (as the
article says) some other recently improved skills as well, that
a different England team might really benefit from.
Anyway, after the absolute horror show for you that was the Ben
Spencer argument, which went poorly and then blew up entirely
when Spencer soiled himself against Care a few days later, I'm
not surprised you've retreated to the safety of talking about a
retired Saracens player this time.
Still absolutely pathological and weird as hell that you spend
your waking hours thinking of ways to troll us, BTW.

I'm not trolling Will Evans any more than you think you're not
trolling Jackson Wray.
Wray had Chris Robshaw ahead of him, a captain famous,
ironically, for not turning up.
