But the sort of player that every club - even salary cap
smashers - needs to be able to rely on. Saracens' very own Alex
Waller / Tom Guest / Sam James / Dave Ewers.

Good players don't always get capped.
'Wev' has never impressed when playing in a London derby match.
Including when he's been playing opposite a certain Jackson
Wray.
Jackson Wray in the playoffs
2012 started - SFinal. Hugh Vyvyan benched
2013 started - SFinal. George Kruis benched
2014 bench - Final. Jaques Burger started
2015 bench - Final. Jacques Burger started
2016 bench - Final. Will Fraser started
2017 started - SFinal. Michael Rhodes benched
2018 started - Final. Michael Rhodes benched
2019 started - Final. Michael Rhodes benched
2022 Injured - Final.
2023 started - Final. Toby Knight benched.
6 out of 9 times Wray was first choice selection in the
playoffs.

I'm not sure if you're aware as I don't think you watched them
much, but Wray was rarely in competition with George Kruis
(primary lock, secondary 6) or Michael Rhodes (primary 6,
secondary lock) given he played the vast majority of matches at
7 or 8. It's no surprise that with specialists available in
those positions he was on the bench. Guys like Jacques Burger,
Fraser, Billy Vunipola, Ben Earl, etc were the preferred options
for their core positions when fit and not at the end of their
careers.
What Wray offered was a safe pair of hands and the knowledge
that he would do a job at 7 or 8 - they could be happy with him
starting in either position if needed. Which was quite often!
And that shouldn't be sneered at. Which is why I won't make a
joke about starting ahead of Toby Knight.
But that still doesn't explain why you're bringing up Jackson
Wray, who made a career out of being durable and flexible enough
to fill gaps in the team most of the time, but didn't stand out
in any particular area, in a thread about how one of the most
outstanding fetchers in the English game has added to his
skillset in recent times and stood out against yet another high
quality international back row. In a match Quins won against the
2nd place side in the URC. Shouldn't you be busy picking the
bones out of the thumping you copped rather than sniping at
sides still in the tournament (for another however many hours,
at least)?

playoff matches. Including Toby Knight.
Regards performing well against test backrows, I could mention
the quality of the opposition Wray started against in European
Cup finals of that helps?

You do know that Jackson Way is retired?
Perhaps we should throw in the mix the quality of opponents that
Zinzan Brooke played against?

Given that a) you'd be incapable of providing any interesting
analysis, b) this thread isn't about Wray, and c) he's retired,
why bother? Wouldn't it be better if you went and touched grass
instead?

Came across really like that in his brief stint doing comms,
though like most players couldn't shake the bias. Definitely
seemed a good combo of being a nice guy and knowledgeable, too.
Can think of plenty of internationals who you couldn't say the
same about...

I said Evans reminds me of Wray but with less versatility. I
suspect he'll finish his playing career similarly unrewarded
with no England cap either. Still, at least he can pop his
turnover stats in his trophy cabinet as compensation.

The only things they have in common is that they both played in
the back row and you've seen both of them play a couple of times

They have a fair bit more in common than that, albeit Evans is
far less successful. If Evans can add a bit more to his game, on
both sides of the ball, then he will definitely add more strings
to his bow.
