They have far greater local support, though. Bordeaux had an
average attendance of 28k last season in a 33k stadium. To be
fair I think they have the largest support but the others do
pretty well.

Great stuff, Fran.
Reminds me of this article on French club rugby, the ties the
community, and the way it all works to allow for playing as an
amateur while supporting a professional side.
Plus the municipal stadium situation doesn't hurt

In France (Top 14 an ProD2) there are two kinds of stadium
policies. Some clubs have large stadiums and seek to attract a
maximum audience with affordable prices (Bordeaux, Lyon, Racing,
Stade Français), others rather seek to systematically fill more
compact stadiums but with high prices, even if it means
relocating times to times for big matches (Bayonne, La Rochelle,
Clermont etc.). Toulouse had this policy until now but the
municipality has just validated a project to extend the Ernest
Wallon stadium to 25 or 30,000 seats. It is certain that the
fact that the stadiums belong mainly to the municipalities
greatly relieves the clubs. But it also forces them to negotiate
for each new idea. Just after Covid, the owner of UBB proposed a
naming agreement for the stadium... it was - fortunately -
refused by the mayor.
