Forgive me for intervening on this subject (and for my
disastrous English). I am a French supporter (of UBB) and I can
just tell you a few things about the economic policy of clubs in
France. Of course, television channels pay a lot to broadcast
rugby which is increasingly popular. But the clubs are less
dependent on television money. Most have developed their
stadiums as festive places. Supporters generally arrive one to
two hours before the match and do not hesitate to stay long
after the matches. It offers collective meals and discotheque
areas for the youngest. In certain cities this enviroment
extends outside the stadium in bars and restaurants which may
belong to the clubs. But sometimes the places are completely
closed. You don't have a bar, not a busy restaurant outside. In
Perpignan, Agen or Lyon for example everything happens WITHIN
the stadium. And the club captures all the profits. A few weeks
ago I read an article in the newspaper l'Equipe which explained
that in Lyon for example they ended up leaving the wickets open
during the match and even after the match. The Fan zone has
become a fashionable place where people do not hesitate to come
even if they do not come to see the match. And the clubs which
have large enough stadiums try to maintain this dynamic by
offering very inexpensive tickets to attract a maximum audience.
For Saturday's match against your Quins I was able to get a
ticket (behind the goals) for €8!!

Merci, Fran, that is a useful insight.
I think a big difference is that if I understand correctly most
French stadia are owned by the municipality, who have
co-invested in developing the ground and facilities. For
instance Toulon's stadium is right in the heart of town and
literally backs onto the mairie and the central town plaza.
In contrast, not all of the English clubs own their own grounds,
and those that do have to pay for the investment themselves.
Very few of them are truly as central to their towns as French
stadia are, and public transport to the grounds is erratic at
best. Perhaps the best hope for rugby is to lobby local
government to create a climate where clubs can develop their
fanzones and make more of each matchday, but not all authorities
are sympathetic to that.

This is very interesting.
It might make sense for clubs like Quins to invest in pubs like
the Cabbage Patch, Town Wharf and Ugos (or whatever it is called
at the moment) in Twickenham town centre.
I suspect that these locations outside the ground make a lot of
money on match days.
I think that Quins already has some sort of partnership with the
Town Wharf for providing match day hospitality.

I went to Agen once on a match day but not to watch rugby. It
was literally closed.

UBB does not own the bars which are located just outside the
stadium. But the club opened a pub along the Garonne River. It
became the supporters' HQ throughout the week. Of course it is
full when the team plays away or during the 6 nations. Usually
there is a big party with the away supporters the day before the
matches in Bordeaux. For those who will be here on Friday, don’t
hesitate to come! It's nice ... and you help us to pay a nail of
Jalibert or Penaud for each pint

Willard van Orman Quine was an American philosopher who died in
2020. His books are still in print, though, so I suspect that
given his outgoings have dropped to zero he is probably making a
small annual profit and has been for nearly a quarter of a
century.

How many home games do the French teams play per season? I’m
sure it’s more than 20. Much easier to make money from I would
think. What is the food and drink like at French stadiums and
how is it priced? If as I suspect it is better and cheaper than
the Stoop then there is your answer.
