I've been thinking about that. Last time out the big difference
was that the ref took early offence at our attempts to defend
their maul, and that gave them a steady source of penalties and
territory for the rest of the game that was decisive.
Quite often a ref forms a view on something very early in the
game and rarely challenges it thereafter - which is a very human
thing to do but it is, in psychological terms, a form of bias.
Where a team is getting a consistent advantage in one area of
the game, a really good ref should constantly be asking
themselves "is that really because they're just better, or are
they doing something illegal that is getting them an edge?" The
obvious one to check - which rarely is - is offside in defence,
which is what makes Sarries blitz so effective.

Yeah this is my thinking. Sarries are pretty spot on at the
basics, and certainly in all our recent meetings just looked
more composed and shaded all aspects of the game. In the mind
the ref probably has it made up they are superior so we would be
on the back foot, and therefore more likely to side with Sarries
for any infringements we "commit". Not all the time of course,
but it probably sways some of those 50/50 calls for sure.

It's comforting to know that the reason Sarries handed Quins
their arses on a plate at the Stoop in November was because of a
few 50/50 calls the ref gave their way. If that's all it takes
we're in with a great chance on Saturday.

I genuinely forgot we were 2nd in the league, but I do think
we're the lesser team and we have a real monkey on our backs
about playing them away from home
