I can only assume you've not watched him play - seems pretty
obvious that he has something, and we risk losing him to
       Scotland.
9 tries in 18 in the league last season and four so far this
season show he's not just promise; Sale are not exactly a fling
       it around team.

I've got 13 Eqp wingers scoring at better rates in their
premiership careers. Assuming that would have been 14 before
lynagh left. And wade is coming back.
Roebuck has an almost identical record to gabs.

Segun, Lewington and Reed all score considerably more often than
       Roebuck.

And yet Roebuck is considered the better player at Sale.
Saracens wingers get a lot more chances (though I think Segun
has really developed), and Roebuck is significantly younger than
both the Saracens pair and younger than Reed.
If you've watched him in the last couple of seasons you'll
understand the hype. His try scoring record for one of the more
safety first teams is similar to that of Tyrone Green. He looks
       a real all round talent.
Wade was an absolute bomb scare in defence and I can't imagine
that's been improved by him disappearing to NFL for a bit

Come come. You know his scoring record is way down, which is why
you're comparing him to a fullback. Absolutely nobody was
calling for him to get capped, except maybe the odd sale fan.

Not just Sale fans, tbf. There has also been some media hype as
well. Seemingly, Flatman’s a big fan of Tom.
Plus, allegedly Scotland were also keen for a chat which could
imply that Townsend thinks he decent.

Tyrone has played on the wing a fair bit, I compared him because
it's an example of a player who is clearly an extremely talented
attacking threat whose try scoring record is similar. And given
that I'm fairly sure you told me that David playing 15 a lot
didn't affect what you saw as a poor try scoring record, I'm a
little lost as to how much it matters.
Having watched a lot of sale over the last few years, I know for
a fact he was talked about in England terms in commentary, and I
was not alone among my rugby watching friends in thinking he
would be worth a shot. Just like I think Carpenter should be in
the conversation at 15 (and Nick David should be as a flexible
back 3 option). These are quality players.

Only 9 tries in 31 senior matches though :-(

       He's a fullback.
.35 tries per game vs .40 for Roebuck - I'd argue strongly that
his try-scoring record is significantly better for his position.
Similar to David's in fact, and Nick gets the luxury of playing
some of his games on the wing :)
