Fleck’s solution appears to be that England should play Finn
Russell.
I know that eligibility laws have changed, but even with that I
don’t think it’s an option.
I also know that in his earlier years Russell made exactly the
same sort of mistakes that Marcus does: trying to play options
that stick at club level but don’t work at international level,
going for the miracle pass too often.
Marcus still has to fine-tune his timing for the pace and space
of international games. He’s been hampered in doing that by
being deployed inconsistently, in attacking systems that don’t
suit him, with players who aren’t giving him the options he
needs, and out of position. Although he’s accumulated a decent
number of caps, we’ve not seen him have a run of games with a
consistent side who have been picked and coached to give him
multiple attacking options.
Give him a run of games in a system that works with his talents,
and only then make a judgement.

Or, England stay in touch in an awful, scrappy game until 70
minutes when Ireland finally pull ahead with a couple of quick
tries. Borthwick throws Smith on to try and win it by himself.
