People also forget that that team took years to reach its
potential.
Out in the QF of the 1999 RWC, booed for celebrating a draw with
the All Blacks, the Tour From Hell, the Dallaglio captaincy
scandal, managed to miss out on the Grand Slam several years in
a row (I once went on a trip to Italy in half-expectation that
they'd manage to lose there having lost to all othe other teams
in successive tournaments), players like Balshaw and
Simpson-Daniel oscillating between brilliance, injury and
incompetence, an ever changing lineup...
It only really all came together for the 2003 6N and Summer
tour, and the RWC was very much a last hurrah - they were behind
to Wales and France in the knockout rounds (though they should
have won the final by a lot more - and would have done if
Woodward had put Leonard on earlier to staunch the scrum
penalties).

Exactly this. For all the talk of a team needing consistency,
the World Cup final starting XV had played together once before
- v Georgia in the pool games.
The likes of Moody, Balshaw, Leonard, Catt dropped in and out.
Lewsey was capped on a tour to America in 01 but only really
became part of the team in the 03 6N.

Looking forward to him coming on at FB for the last 90 seconds.
Ford has been poor all tournament. Probably keeps reminding SB
about the performance against the Argies at the RWC

Quite. To be fair, Moody was covering for Hill's injury, Catt
was managing his own fitness (he says in his autobiography that
he told Woodward he could only play a bench role in the final),
and Leonard had by that point become one of the superest of
super-subs.
But it's absolutely true that the final squad came together very
late. Woodman and Lewsey were both late additions to the 2003
squad, Catt came back from the international wilderness very
late on and Thompson's conversion to hooker was a work in
progress until 2002.

According to National Highways it's the weekend of the 15th /
18th March.
" Friday 15 March 9pm to Monday 18 March 6am the M25 between
junction 10 and 11 in both directions, for demolition works and
gantry installation."

I typically have a lot of time for Martin Offiah, and I remember
attending the HQ events, both 7s and the Bath fixture in 1996 he
references. It's a valid reflection of the trajectories achieved
by the different Unions that meet this Saturday
