RFU abandons shock plans to sell Twickenham and buy 50 per cent
stake of Wembley... with English rugby's governing body pledging
to move ahead with £663m overhaul of west London venue instead.

The Guardian reported much the same this morning.
While I haven't seen any indication of what capital the sale of
Twickenham would raise, it just instinctively feels like a very,
very bad idea. I'm staggered it even made it onto someone's
agenda, and I can just hear Harold McMillan complaining about
       selling the family's silver.
They keep blathering on about "the fan experience". Just win a
few games in some style and lower the ticket prices a little
       please?

...and now I think about it, urinals built into the seats would
       help too

Ultimately this is what it's about. People go to rugby to watch
the actual sport, and want to be entertained on the pitch, and
walk away with a win. No one buys an England ticket with some
latest fan village attraction as being the reason to go.

True but if might be the reason someone stays. Or are happy to
beat the traffic and get there a bit earlier. Thus helping the
station be that little bit quieter.
Whilst they’re there they might buy another drink. Or a burger.
Maybe something from the England shop.
Plus a pants game is a pants game. A pants game with some
post-match entertainment can still be a good day out.

Unfortunately, if you have 20,000 fans and need to sell 70,000
tickets, ten 50,000 are by definition people who could be at any
day out, and that is how you attract the uncommitted.
If you were listening to the today programme this morning, the
head of English netball was making similar noises about enhanced
experiences - quoting the NBA's LED enhanced court as an
       example.
But they insist on calling these people "fans".

In France they often say that there are 3 halves to a rugby
game. The 1st and 2nd half take place on the pitch and are not
       so important.
The 3rd half is the important bit and takes place in the bar
afterwards. This is where the day is won or lost.

The Times also has the story and report Twickenham was valued at
       £220M.

Isn't this whole story just the RFU putting together an Options
       Paper then going through them?
