in the Telegraph says the Super Rugby
Pacific comp is looking to scrap/amend the laws to stop the
rather unedifying spectacle that has crept into the game of
players being "played" onside without retreating or being put
onside by the kicker. Frankly, I'll be happy to see this go.

100% behind this proposal, could always add having to put the
ball in straight in scrums and banning the caterpillar.

Yeah, Dupont started doing in in '22 in the France v England
game in the 6 Nations. The worst passage of play, though, was
last month in the Bath vs Gloucester premiership game at the
Rec. Here's the link to the full game

But if the kicker chases his own kick, he can be in the
opposition kicker's face within five or six seconds.
With a high kick, the hang time can be three or four.
The chaser and his chums are then all onside, while most of the
opposition are offside.
Surely that is better.

Well, you can't make the players chase and it appears they're
choosing not to on occasion.

I've seen the clip before but hadn't appreciated it was due to
this loophole. I assumed some poor chaps were having to sprint
back and forth all for nowt

Already confirmed by World Rugby to allow Super rugby to scrap
the loophole.
In a trial approved by World Rugby, the competition organisers
have closed the loophole that has led to the ‘kick tennis’ duels
in the Six Nations and northern hemisphere club rugby. Two
clauses in rugby’s current offside laws state that players can
be put onside by a kick receiver who runs back five metres or
passes the ball, even if they are ahead of the kicker. Super
Rugby Pacific officials have effectively thrown those clauses in
the bin, and Super Rugby Pacific chair Kevin Malloy confirmed on
Tuesday that the change was a direct response to feedback from
fans, coaches and players.
Not sure what a player who is in front of the kicker can/can't
do to be onside.

Nothing, on their own, other than retire behind the kicker or
someone else who's onside but the important thing is they can't
get involved until they're onside and the receiver running more
than 5 metres or passing won't put them onside.

I suppose the idea is that the person receiving the kick is more
likely to run forward.
So the kicker is under more pressure to run forward to put their
mates onside, to stop them.
It might work.
