Times reporting Sinfield is set to replace Flannery.

Harlequins are interested in speaking to Kevin Sinfield about
joining them as a coach when he leaves his England role, as they
prepare to lose Jerry Flannery to the Springboks.
It is understood that Flannery, the 45-year-old former Ireland
hooker, is set to leave Quins mid-season and join South Africa —
reuniting with the former Munster coach Rassie Erasmus. He has
been lined up as the Springboks’ next defence coach, replacing
his great friend Felix Jones, who now coaches England, having
helped South Africa to win back-to-back World Cups.
It is believed that Flannery will leave Harlequins in the coming
weeks, with his last match likely to be the friendly against
Munster on February 23.
South Africa want Flannery to start soon, alongside their new
attack coach, Tony Brown, the New Zealander who has coached
Japan, so they can hit the ground running in the summer. The
Boks are looking to play a standalone Test against Wales at
Twickenham in June, and have confirmed home matches against
Portugal and Ireland, twice, in July. The Rugby Championship
starts in August.
Flannery’s expected departure will leave a hole in the
Harlequins coaching team. While the club have time to fill the
role, it is understood that Sinfield will be considered for
their initial shortlist. Quins have not yet approached him and
it remains to be seen if the 43-year-old would be open to the
move, which would require relocating his family from the north
of England to London.
Sinfield, the rugby league legend, joined England’s coaching
team from Leicester Tigers with Steve Borthwick in December
2022. He is leaving after the summer tour to Japan and New
Zealand but is still finalising the financial terms of his
departure with the RFU and has not lined up his next move.
Sinfield said last week he wanted to stay in coaching and he
missed the day-to-day rhythms of working with a club team, but
thought it was unlikely that he would return to league, where he
made his name as a Leeds Rhinos player. Initially he coached
England’s defence, up to the World Cup last year, but has been
moved by Borthwick to a “skills” role, which involves working
with the kickers, to accommodate the arrival of Jones.
While Quins look for a suitable replacement for Flannery, their
present coaches Billy Millard, Danny Wilson, Nick Evans, Adam
Jones and Jordan Turner-Hall will have to cover his absence
until the end of the season. The club have time to reorganise
themselves now there is no competitive match until March 23, as
the Gallagher Premiership breaks for the Six Nations.
Flannery’s departure comes with the club’s blessing. He has been
at Quins since 2020, having arrived from Munster, where he spent
nine years as a player and five as a coach. He won 41 Ireland
caps and was picked for the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour to
South Africa but had to withdraw because of injury.
He initially ran the lineout at Quins and was part of the
coaching group, along with Jones, Evans and Millard, that
inspired them to their Premiership title win in 2021 after Paul
Gustard was sacked in January that year.
Flannery has latterly taken on coaching Harlequins’ defence, the
role he is primed to do with South Africa. He has already
amassed a strong coaching CV, having spent some time with
Arsenal when they were managed by Arsène Wenger in 2013, after
he had retired from playing because of injury in 2012.
Flannery worked with Erasmus — and the former Boks coach Jacques
Nienaber, who is now at Leinster — when the South African was at
Munster between 2016 and 2017.

It would be a shame to lose Flannery - though he's earned the
step up to international level. But Super Kev would be a very
fine replacement.

So Quins have leaked their interest before making any contact
with Sinfield. Is this a common approach? Especially as he's
just on a shortlist.

Good for flannery - congratulations. As our lineout and defence
remain long-standing weaknesses, I'm not sure it's that big a
blow.
We seem to have a lot of coaches so surely someone can slot in
and do a decent enough job for the rest of the season
Not sure about sinfield though. Is he too big an influence /
personality. Lots of biggish names already in our coaching
set-up.

Good luck to Flannery, deserves his chance at the highest level.
Sinfield is exactly the kind of appointment we need to replace
him but we'll probably end up with Gustard 😂

Gustard was a good defense coach by all accounts, in the same
way Kingston was a good coach. Neither were cut out for a
broader role being the head honcho though.
