       Paul Gustard/Eggchasers

For anyone that listens to the Eggchaser podcast their latest
episode has an interesting Harlequins sub-plot.
The three presenters went for beers with Paul Gustard in Paris
last weekend. He spoke "off record" at some length about rugby
       including his time at Quins.
One of the points discussed is how every player he spoke about
was accompanied by how much they were earning or how much of the
       salary cap he took up.
They didn't name the player but someone at Quins was earning 6 x
what Alex Dombrant was when he arrived at Quins yet was offering
much lower value on the pitch.
I think Dommers arrived in 2018 (after Easter had retired) - who
was our No8 at the time? Or perhaps this was another player....
Mark Evans thinks Gustard's recruitment (Esterhazen, Green etc)
was the basis of our Prem win, if not the coaching. Apparently,
Gustard had to get rid of many contracts that Kingston had
signed that weren't beneficial to the club.
       Interesting stuff.

I wouldn't take it to mean specifically a back rower.

It's not that shocking, as far as I can see.
Although he wasn't officially in the academy, Dombrandt could
well have been on a similar level of cash in his first year give
he came straight from uni. I seem to remember academy contracts
       are typically around £25,000.
Assuming that's correct, I can well believe that a player was on
£150,000 but not performing to Dombrandt's level.

Hadn't considered that, Yareet. Good point.

I’m just pleased he moved on and got what he wanted “to be part
of a group where there was a clear vision, a deep level of
trust, and a dynamic environment driven towards high goals.”
       Whatever that meant.

Gustard's recruits were in a bottom of the table when he got
       summarily fired.

I’d say Catrakillis was probably on a wedge. If it was someone
underpforming it could well be him, or maybe Ismael (sp?)

I remember John Kingston saying similar. Once he found out how
much players were earning - which he didn't know until he was
DoR - it put a very different perspective on their value.
Also Mark Evans saying that getting a really good player
straight from the academy was the whole point as you got a
couple of years out of them for peanuts.

I love this podcast and have been listening for years, I would
have loved to have been a 'fly on the wall' when they were
chatting with Gustard. His time at Quins didn't ultimately work
out but his recruitment is some of the best since I have been
supporting the club - Andre, Greene, Wilco, David etc. There
have been many a player who has arrived with fireworks in the
last decade or so who just hasn't worked out We are good at
growing our own but the recruitment has been pretty dodgy at
       times.................

I spent 20 years working for and with a few US IT companies and
we would have regarded that as the clearest executive message
       we'd ever heard.
