FWIW, I think talking about academy products can be a little
misleading.
Some join the academy when they’re 13, and that’s where they
learn the bulk of their rugby. Some join at 13 but then get
loaned out and end up learning more from other clubs. Others
sign up when they’re 18, having learned a lot of their rugby
with another club before they even arrive. I’m not sure a player
being an academy graduate tells us much, or that it really
matters.
To be honest, the ‘best acadamies’ (by production) are just the
ones with the best scouting. Sarries have done this well in
recent history and they’ve produced some great talent as as a
result (Farrel/Itoje/George) but the reality is all 3 were
brought into the academy as huge talents (maybe less so George,
but even then, he was scouted and head hunted).
Obviously it’s nice to have ‘home grown’ players. Fans have a
certain affinity with them. But I’m not sure that’s really about
the academy. I feel the same for Dombrandt and Care as I do
Smith and Marler. Sinckler (Marchant soon to join?!) is a
distant memory and I don’t really have much of an affinity with
Launchbury (though he’s been great for us!). Maybe it’s more to
do with loyalty and length of service.
Just my musings.

But Farrell is only there because his Dad played there and was a
coach, he came through the Northern system first, so would have
been Sale academy really had his Dad not been down here so not
really 'a find'

Not really. Didn't he play league until he came down south? I
don't know of many Sale academy products who came from league.
Ben Bamber maybe but even he went to Bristol first.

Yeah, there's a clear difference between someone like Farrell vs
Mako, who was signed straight out of Bristol's academy.
There's no question that Saracens had a glut of superb academy
graduates at one point. Fair to say the output hasn't remained
at that level, but they do better than most.
Then again, we produced a title winning team, an England
captain, a couple of lions, and plenty of internationals. Not
perfect, but not an embarrassment either - we have a cracking
team that people love to watch, stuffed with home grown talent.
Any effort to needle Quins fans over the efficacy of the academy
is hilarious.

Obviously I was making the leap that had he wanted to play Union
whilst up North, Sale would have been his closest option.
He only started Union because he was darn sarf and we don't play
'Ad.....your it' down here. Although George Ford's path took him
to Leicester academy
