The RFU have an institutionalized problem and just getting rid
of Sweeney won't solve it, but it will be a good start. Being as
Sweeney is very influential in who is picked as our head coach,
he is still an important cog to replace, if we wanted proper
change.

Well your mates at the RFU aren't too sharp; Sweeney was CEO of
the BOA when Jones was appointed.

Hhhhmmmm some very strange comments above. At the end of the
day, Sweeney is a businessman and it's all about money rolling
in and bums on seats. If Twickenham was half empty every game
and it was deemed that that was due to the style of play, then
you would see a change in coaching ethos.
That said, it's a results business and if you play with flair
and loose every game in a packed stadium, any coach is under
threat from day one. I still think the fair of failure drives
our sporting mentality in England and until we're happy to just
let them get on with it for the length of their contract, that
won't change.
As stated previously on his arrival, had Borthwick said 'I'm
gonna play a slow, turgid, kicking game for my tenure and pick
players who play that way' then we'd have all been pleased that
we knew what the strategy was, rather than tinkering with flair
players and holding them back. We as supporters could then make
a choice and say we'd let those who like that brand go to HQ for
games and when the ethos changes, we'll all go back again.

This is what the Grauniad had to say about Bill Sweeney's
appointment in February 2019. By the metric of financial
results he's doing his job; other metrics.....?
The Rugby Football Union has appointed Bill Sweeney as its new
chief executive. Sweeney has spent five and a half years as the
British Olympic Association’s chief executive and, while he has
little rugby experience, does have a proven commercial track
record and will be charged with guiding the RFU out of financial
turmoil.
Sweeney replaces Steve Brown, whose shock resignation after 14
months in the job last November came amid growing criticism of
the RFU’s parlous financial state. Shortly before his departure
the RFU announced a £30.9m loss following 62 redundancies.
The RFU placed a premium on commercial experience rather than a
strong rugby administrative CV during the recruitment process
and Sweeney’s success in turning the BOA’s £700,000 losses in
2014 to record profits in 2016 will have played a key role in
landing him the job.

Clive must be furious with the sub-editor at the Mail as in the
interests of space they had to cut point 11.....bring back a
well known knighted coach

What is the institutionalised problem? I’m not saying there
isn’t one, just that, like SCW, broad brush statements won’t do
much to provide solutions what are complex problems at all
levels of the game. One of which is England playing tedious
rugby in recent times.

But Sweeney was in place (and importantly Nigel Melville had
left, while C O'S was still with Italy - so there was no
Director of Rugby) when Jones contract was extended, despite the
dire results of 2018.

I may be wrong but this article
(www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/jan/17/eddie-jones-signs-new-england-rugby-union-head-coach-cotract-extension-till-2021)
would suggest Jones was extended in 2018 having won 22/23 games
including a Slam, Oz whitewash and another 6N.
He then extended again in 2020
(www.englandrugby.com/news/article/eddie-jones-agrees-new-england-rugby-contract-until-2023-rugby-world-cup)
I'd imagine to give some consistency in the early days of covid
but also, off the back of a World Cup final.
In a results-driven business, neither of those extensions would
seem ridiculous. Whether he was kept on too long is another
matter - especially given teh performance at the 2021 6N.
