RFU Annual Report 2023

The RFU annual report is out and the finances are sound.

Not exactly a bodice ripper, or a page turner, but a lot of info
in there.

I’ve not seen any good reporting on it, so I thought people
might value a summary.
The overall picture is fairly complex. The good news is:
- COVID debts have been repaid
- Revenue is back up to around pre-COVID levels
- Rugby investment is also up
- The Red Roses v France game generated around £1m - but that’s
a lot less than a men’s game would
- There is a small profit at an operating level
The less positive news is:
- There’s a reduction in reserves, essentially because
investment was increased more than revenue was
- This would normally be the most profitable year in the RFU’s
cycle (4 AIs, 3 6N home games, warm ups, in the low capital
expenditure part of the cycle), boosting reserves for the rest
of the cycle but debt repayment plus maintaining investment
means they haven’t been able to do that
Overall, they’ve done a lot to stabilise RFU finances and keep
paying money into the game, but it’s still going to be tricky
for the next few years. And obviously it could be seriously
affected by the outcome of the concussion court case - though
that could drag on for a long time.

Thanks for the summary. I haven't read the report but from what
you say they've aimed for stability.
Excuse my lack of knowledge, but do the RFU get any financial
benefits from the RWC?

People will probably spend more on beer if they have to watch
more Bortherball in a couple of months.

Not directly, but they get home warm up matches instead of a
summer tour, and more interest in the 6N after a good showing by
England.
They made a huge amount of money by hosting England 2015, though
that was eroded by COVID and building a new hospitality suite at
the wrong point in the cycle.
The big question is how much they can earn from RWC2025. World
Rugby haven't published their 2022 Annual Report yet as far as I
can see, but I am sure they don't demand as big a financial
commitment from the host country for the women as they do for
the men. Against that you have to set lower attendances and
ticket prices - but I am pretty sure that if the RFU are smart
about it they can get good attendance at the regional pool games
and build towards a full Twickenham for the Final (and I think
that they could sell out a semi-final double header, too).
Making the most of 2025 won't fill the coffers like 2015 did,
but it could provide a financial boost nonetheless - even more
so if doing so boosts attendance / viewership at WXV / W6N and
PWR games.

It's a bit of a shambles really. Much of their "investment" is
nothing of the sort of it's"expenditure".
It is good that they've repaid the debt though.

As far as I can see "rugby investment" is the term they use for
anything they spend on rugby outside the RFU - on grassroots
clubs, player and coach development, promoting the game etc.
It's important (and probably required by accounting standards)
to differentiate between that and expenditure on things that are
directly in the RFU's control.
I'd be interested to know in what ways you think it's a
shambles.

Saw there's talk of the premiership final no longer being held
at HQ. Presumably there will be some sort of financial hit if
that happens.

The other clubs are clearly worried that it gives Quins an
unfair advantage...
