lying about anything?

Dommers had to quit social media earlier this year because of
severe abuse towards him after playing for England, I don't
remember him not wanting to play for England. Maybe he's
mentally tougher.

Austin on the telly, saying that there's a difference between
criticism and critique, and clearly pushing back on the idea
floated by McCall that it's the mainstream media to blame -
which I don't think is unfair, as Farrell hasn't had a rough
ride from the press over the years. He makes the point that it's
all water off a ducks back until something happens that affects
your family - your partner, your kids, your in laws - and talks
about (his, I think) kids being sent abusive stuff. He went from
being able to laugh things off to getting extremely angry about
it.
In other words - the general background noise of being a high
profile player is fine and easily dealt with until a line is
crossed and something drags the family in to it. Which is
basically where I'm coming from.
However, Farrell has been in the limelight for an extremely long
time and I can see how that would wear him down. As others have
said, he's not a natural media guy and doesn't really want the
attention. All that focus on him could easily grind him down
regardless of how much of it is criticism, and I can see how the
very high profile drama of his high tackles, bans, and the focus
on his role in the team in the last year might make him sick of
the whole circus.
Either way, I hope the decision works out for him in the way he
wants it to.

Robshaw got a very rough time as a captain. Marler and brown got
loads of abuse, especially during 6 nations. So, not saying
Farrell isn't entitled to take a break, but the idea that he is
unfairly treated by the media is frankly nonsense. It's fair to
criticise him for his tackling and his approach to referees.
It's reasonable to prefer other options at 10 and to suggest he
might have too much influence on the England coaching set up.
Dare I say that the way he conducts himself with officials could
lead to greater dissent at amateur level too.
It is clear though that sadly there are some pillocks who think
nothing of sending threats and abuse to players / officials and
their families. If this has happened then no wonder he wants to
step back.
All the best to him, but let's not suddenly have this narrative
that he's treated unfairly by the sporting press. Playing in a
pivotal position in any sport, and captaining your country, will
almost mean greater scrutiny

I agree with T-Bone. Farrell’s experience isn’t materially
different from what other players have gone through - and is
probably significantly milder than what Robshaw faced, whatever
McCall thinks.
He’s completely entitled to take a break from International
rugby. He may even be learning from the precedent Marler has
set. If Joe had soldiered on through the earlier periods when he
needed a break, I don’t think he’d have been able to contribute
the way he did in 2019 and 2023.
One observation I would make is that Farrell’s decision to
withdraw now may be motivated by looking forward rather than
looking back. Everyone (barring some of the more excitable
members of the press and fezheads) recognises that Borthwick
would be taking a huge risk by not developing a younger fly half
ahead of 2027. There’s a good chance that Farrell will still be
playing at 36, but also a good chance that he will have lost
enough that - like Sexton - he might be exposed in the cauldron
of a knockout game.
If Farrell makes himself available for international rugby, then
the circus rolls on. If he isn’t selected then it’s a snub, if
he is selected then he’s blocking the development of another fly
half. By withdrawing temporarily, he silences all of that and,
like Marler, if he chooses to return the narrative is about
earning his place back. It’s a reset button that buys everyone a
bit of space.
