       Something you resemble.
Something you seem to do a lot of.
Something that you could learn from.

That did occur to me. Jump before he's pushed.

Nah. Borthwick made it extremely clear post world cup that
Farrell was going to be his main man for the foreseeable future,
and everything he did at the world cup suggests he views Farrell
as the default choice for 10 and captain.
Besides, I don't believe for a second that Farrell would use his
and his family's mental health as a smokescreen, let alone for
anything as minor as getting dropped, and I certainly don't
believe Borthwick would play along with it either. There's just
zero reason not to take it at face value.

no chance. I dislike Farrell intensely as a player, but there's
absolutely no way he comes up with some sob story to deflect,
and there's no way Borthwick doesn't pick hi if he's available.

I don't think he's making up the mental health angle but I think
he deliberately hasn't made any kind of statement because it's
easy to let the public think that online abuse/criticism is the
cause. I get the feeling it's something else that we'll never
       find out about.
It'll be interesting to see how Ford and maybe Smith go without
his domineering effect on the players around him. Particularly
Smith, if he gets that chance. Ford seems pretty comfortable
       either way.

Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing Ford be the ten with Smith
and Smith pushing for his place. He's rarely looked anything
other than supremely comfortable when given full responsibility.
With Lawrence looking the outstanding option in midfield, it's
just a question of who else goes there - and whether it's at 12
or 13. A huge opportunity for a someone to really put their hand
up over the next few months.

Can't say there's anything in particular I'm looking forward to
when it comes to Borthwick's England. I suppose he may alter his
previous tactics but I'm not getting my hopes up.

FWIW, I'm not sure we would have all of this second guessing for
many other players. I can't imagine a similar reaction had it
       been (for example) Lawes.
McCall has come out and cited the abuse Farrell gets as the
reason. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't do if there was a hidden
agenda. For me, we therefore have to be prepared to accept that
there isn't another cause. And the fact that Farrell is renowned
for being so keen to play for England should be a stronger
argument for how deeply he has been suffering.
Comparing one person's mental health decisions to another's is
a red herring. We have no idea what any player has been through
nor what impact that has on their wellbeing.
Although I am tempted to agree that any player would be less
likely to voluntarily stand down in a World Cup or Lions year.

He's a lightning rod for criticism of England Rugby both
internally and externally. Not surprised it has got to him.
