Farrell taking a break from International rugby
DIR By: Fearless Fred
Date: November 29, 2023, 9:16 am

Just announced in the telegraph. Will post article shortly.
---------------------------------------------------------
Okay, they're running a "live feed" on their site. This is the
only bit so far:
--- Quote ---
> Farrell will not play in the Six Nations
> Owen Farrell will not be available for selection for the 2024
Six Nations after deciding to take a break from international
rugby to prioritise his and his family’s mental health.
>
> The England captain will still play for Saracens, but it is
unclear when he will be back available for England.
>
> Head coach Steve Borthwick released a statement, supporting
his captain’s decision.
>
> “Everyone at England Rugby is fully behind Owen’s decision,”
said Borthwick.
>
> “Since making his debut, he has been an integral part of the
England set up for over a decade and the demands on elite
athletes are extremely challenging. He is an exemplary player,
captain and leader and always gives his all for his country.
>
> “It is with typical courage that Owen has made this decision
to open up in this manner.
>
> “Together with all of us at England Rugby, I will do
everything I can to ensure that he has the support he requires
going forward.”
--- End Quote ---

Hopefully he sorts whatever issues he has out, but from an
England perspective it will be good to see what our options are
now.
I suspect Ford is the banker at 10, which really is no bad thing
at all. I suspect Marcus, and also Finn Smith will be in the
equation for the 6 nations.
Also, will be interesting to see how we line up in the 6n at
centre. Lawrence with Slade is my bet judging on early form

I'm not a Farrell fan at all but applaud him for putting his
mental health and family first. He looks like he's playing with
a smile on his face now so probably made this decision a while
ago

All the booing and negative Social Media at the WC have probably
played a big part. The cynic in me would point out that it is in
probably the best year of the Rugby cycle to do it but would
always support someone stepping away if it is keeping them up at
nights.

While I would normally support that level of cynicism, I think
it's pretty clear that being England captain is a huge thing for
Farrell and so it would take an awful lot for him to voluntarily
step back from playing for England. I suspect there's more to it
than the criticism he received, but I doubt we'll find out any
time soon, if ever.

Agreed that we won't find out but for me, the worry would be
that if England have a cracking 6N and Ford and the Smith's (now
having images of Morrisey at 10 swinging a Gladioli) he then
walks back in to the NZ/Japan tour and we get gubbed, all the
negativity will start again so his mental health is straight
under the spotlight again.
Now, if its personal troubles/general fatigue and he is
prioritising his family, why not take a break from all Rugby and
focus on that?
Just feels weird and doomed to more aggro later.

And what do you suspect there is more to it?
Just about the most ungracious take I've read from anyone.

I think you should try re-reading the post. You sound like a
twonk.

Yeah, is it? I suspect you've read practically no takes at all,
in that case.
I suspect there's more to it because I don't think the criticism
he received earlier in the season would be enough to drive him
to give up playing for England for his and his family's mental
health. Hence, I suspect something else, probably more serious,
happened, something that we're unaware of and are unlikely to
ever find out.
There is zero lack of grace there, zero criticism, and zero
accusations. As usual your complete inability to understand
basic English has tripped you up at the first stage.

Nobody had given Marsile something to properly moan about, but
he was really really ready to moan, so it has to be you I'm
afraid...
