Exeter Chiefs are to launch an investigation after an allegation
of racist abuse made by Ugo Monye, the former England wing.
Monye, who was covering the Chiefs v Gloucester fixture for TNT
Sports, described the incident as “the most blatant racism” he
has experienced at any rugby stadium.
After the match an angry Monye posted details of the episode on
social media. “Leaving Sandy Park and one supporter running
through crowd starts shouting ‘Nigga, Nigga…’” he wrote.
“Disgraceful. Not a single person said a word, challenged or
even reported it.
“He walks off after a mild scuffle and fans are now telling me
‘We’re with you.’ BOLLOCKS you’re with me. You weren’t with me
when you saw and heard the most blatant racism I’ve seen from a
supporter at a live game. So fed up.”
Exeter were swift to respond, condemning such behaviour “in the
strongest possible terms” and calling on other supporters to
supply further information. “Our team will begin to review CCTV
footage from the stadium immediately in an attempt to identify
the individual in question.
“We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to Ugo Monye, a
member of the rugby community [who] is highly respected by
everyone at our club. If anyone has any information regarding
this incident we would ask you to get in touch with the Chiefs
as soon as you can.”
Premiership Rugby and Gloucester have also expressed full
support for Monye, who is also a Guardian columnist. Gloucester
have called for a thorough investigation – “Racism has no place
anywhere – including in our sport” – while Premiership Rugby
said it stood “united with our clubs and players in the fight
against racism”.

The Club is appalled by the racist abuse suffered by former
Harlequin Ugo Monye.
There is absolutely no place for racism in our sport. Rugby is a
sport for all.
Our support is with Ugo and we urge anyone with information to
assist Exeter Chiefs with their investigation.
You can share any information with Exeter Chiefs or via the
RFU’s Speak Up form.

It's called having a balanced viewpoint. I'd be surprised if
somebody had a scuffle with Ugo that nobody stepped in. You
might feel differently. I'd certainly have stepped in. Again,
you might not have.

Your question comes across (to me) as, 1 Ugo says noone stepped
in, 2 but he says there is a minor scuffle. So is that someone
stepping it?

No, you can't question anything, even if it's literally
verbatim.
Its pretty clear what Quinky is saying. What ugo says doesn't
make any sense. He says there's a minor scuffle, but nobody
stepped in. That doesn't make sense. If there's a scuffle then
somebody obviously stepped in. It doesn't sound like ugo had the
scuffle.

Indeed. I'm pretty sure Ugo would have stated that he'd been
involved in a scuffle if that were the case.

All captured on CCTV it appears, so hopefully that will mean a
life ban from all premiership grounds for whoever it was, plus
whatever action police can take depending on evidence.
As per very sensible comments on the other thread, this is
exactly why things like black history month and lgbtq
inclusivity at the club are important - because these morons are
out there.
And one level of it is going as far as shouting direct appalling
racial abuse - but there are plenty of other more subtle forms
of discrimination that if, like me, you’re white, and middle
aged and male, and straight, you never notice or know happen and
would happily say, as many do, “well I’ve never stopped anyone
showing up to play rugby, there aren’t any barriers at our
club”.
So yes, sometimes you might think that Quins are making thing a
bit too much of an “issue”, but you have to be bold and loud to
create genuine change in any social environment.
The good news is when you notice they’ve backed off a bit, it’ll
be because we’ve actually managed to break down barriers to
participation in sport and changed attitudes.

zero tolerance for this. there is a suitable charge available to
the police of threatening and aggressive behaviour punishable by
a prison sentence. its not like there aren't any witnesses.
