Not interested in doing England any favours. Smith might ask if
he can play there to aid his England chances but he really needs
to be pushing to play 10. Not sure it works for us in any way.

It's amazing how much concern an unsubstantiated rumour and a
presumption can generate. 😁

I’d rather have nick David at 15 until green is back to being
better than him; which he’s not at the moment.

I think a lot will come down to Marcus' own ambitions. Farrell
is only 32 and doesn't seem to have any intention to retire from
international rugby. I assume Borthwick will remain as England
coach for the next couple of years having scraped into RWC 2023
semi-final and Farrell Snr seems to be the favourite for Lions
Head Coach. So I can see a terrible scenario where Farrell
continues as 1st choice fly half for England long enough to be
selected for the Lions tour by his Dad.
If Marcus wants the lucrative rewards that being part of an
England squad generates, then he might have to settle for being
utility sub for fly-half & fullback and therefore he may request
more game time at fullback for Quins in order to fulfill that
role - I don't think Borthwick can exert any pressure on Quins
to play him there, but Marcus might.
It would be a terrible waste of his talents as a starting fly
half for both club and country, but England don't exactly have a
history of playing "mercurial" fly halves (Barnes, Cipriani etc)

Well, perhaps Mr Smith needs to demonstrate that he's better
than the options - not forgetting Ford - who's in Borthwick's
mind.
FHs often drop back to cover or double up (with 50:22s), so
improving his catching, tackling (which isn't as bad as some
wingers, past and present) and his "percentage" play such that
he can challenge the others is where he can improve and put
himself in Mr B's eyeline.
It will do Quins a lot of good as he'll hopefully see when and
where to be more expansive across the board.

On the other hand, if he's continually overlooked in favour of
an undroppable Farrell, he may end up pursuing far more
lucrative rewards in France or even Japan. If at any point money
becomes his main motivation, I doubt he'll stay in England.

I really don't think that Farrell will still be around as
primary fly half in 4 years' time. Even if he keeps himself in
good nick, we saw with Ireland that at the highest level a
fractional drop off in Sexton's considerable ability was costly
when the chips were down.
Borthwick's nothing if not pragmatic, and will know that he
needs to develop a younger fly half option over the next couple
of years. The question is whether he's prepared to commit to the
personnel and playing style changes it will take to get the most
out of Smith, M or whether he prefers to go with a more
conventional game manager like Smith, F.
You'd have expected the Springboks to favour the latter (and
ultimately they reverted to type), but Feiix Jones revitalised
the Bok attack by bringing Libbok in, so maybe he will argue the
same for England.

We've seen players like Barrett alternate between playing 10 and
playing 15. Provided that it builds up his skillset, and works
for us for the games in which he plays there, then I am ok with
it.
