The Prince at XV

Listening to Two Woods & Four Quarters (excellent podcast) this
morning and they said they'd heard rumours that Marcus might
play some games at XV, I presume to help with England's plans.
Two things distress me about that.
1. He's the most gifted 10 in the world, why would we?
2. That means Borthwick would be wedded to Farrell again or
another 10
All rumour, of course, but I wouldn't want that at Quins, even
with jEV playing well

I'm actually okay with Smudger playing at 15 on occasion.
Remember, we used to do the same occasionally when NEv was first
choice FH but we wanted to give gametime to his backups like
Clegg, Botica, Urdapilletta, etc.

On occasion is fine but not as a tactic to help his England
chances. I know it won't be a massive drop in skillset and he
can easily go back to 10, if he has Lions ambitions he won't be
selected at XV. especially if Farrell Snr get's the role, he'll
go with a recognised fullback.......and rightly so

If its true (and it wouldn't surprise me if the question had at
least been asked), I can see the scenario being something like,
Marcus starts with Jarrod on the bench. After 60 minutes, Jarrod
on at 10 and Smith to Full-Back with Nick David or Tyrone
(depending on selection) coming off/moving to the wing as
required. Gives Marcus time at 15, Jarrod time at 10 and a
different look for the opposition to deal with in the last 10-15
minutes. Is it ideal? No. Could it work? Time will tell. I'm not
sure I'd want to see it from the start of a game however this
way will at least give Jarrod game time before the Six Nations
as I assume Marcus will be involved in some form or other and
therefore away.

Pointless
If the question is:
Is Marcus able to be an absolute rock as the last line of
defense, be dominant in the air claiming the high ball? Then the
answer is sadly no, as that's not his strongest attributes. On
that basis alone, he is not a FB and it's pointless to entertain
it.
If its a case of a mid game injury to a regular FB, and there
isn't anyone else, can Marcus play FB? Sure, as a stop gap.
Rather than trying to shoe horn Marcus in the side, there are
more pressing matters such as addressing the issues in the
centre and front row.
What happened to just developing the best players for their best
position?

Odds on that is going to happen and most likely make him captain
to compound the situation.

I don't see it as shoehorning Marcus specifically into the team
but more a way of having two playmakers which in turn allows the
team to have two proper centres. I can't think of an
up-and-coming playmaking centre (in the Jordie Barrett/Slade
mould) and Steward definitely isn't a playmaking 15.

We should do what's best for Quins. That's Smith at 10 and
Tyrone at fullback.
