Idea for boosting the Premiership club numbers

With only 10 teams now, might it be advantageous to expand using
existing teams (ie the 4 Welsh clubs in the United Rugby
Championship) ? This would help these Welsh sides financially
(i.e. no travel to S.Africa, Italy, Ireland etc). I don't know
the practicalities of possibly getting this set up, but it seems
that the Premiership is ring-fenced in England due to Stadium
sizes etc etc as has been mentioned so often on this forum.
Personally, I would love to see Ealing in the Premiership but it
seems destined not happen.

Couldn't agree more - actually for a while now i've wondered
about including welsh and scottish teams.
I doubt the Irish teams would be keen - very tricky to unpick.

A British and Irish league, with the Italians joining France.
But, if you did that, I would have the European tournament at
the end of the season after the six nations. That way,
qualification can be based on the results from the same season
as the competition.
But, the fly in the ointment would be the fact that the Welsh,
Scottish and Irish sides are franchises part owned by their
unions, while the English clubs are not.
And, I believe they all get less funding that the English clubs.
And if there were a single league, the funding would need to be
equalised. Which means the English clubs would probably need to
give up some funding.
And then there is CVC, it owns 20% of the share in PRL.
Would that turn into rights into any new tournament, if it did,
would that mean the English clubs receiving less than the other
sides.

Bearing in mind their RWC exploits, get a Portuguese club team
up and running and invite them in, the players (and some fans)
would like a few days in the sun during the cold winter months.
Their crowds (at first) couldn't be any worse than Salarycens
risible attendances. Not gonna happen but you've got to grow the
game somehow.

I can see the sense in the welsh and maybe the Scot's but
Ireland would have too much to lose. They pretty much boss their
Pro Pub League resting International players other than against
Munster, Ulster and the Saffers and in Europe. Playing in a
competitive league week in week out, they'd want reassurances
that they'd qualify for Europe regardless of where they
finished.

I think there is always a challenge in including Welsh teams.
My understanding is that rugby has to be free-to-air on Welsh TV
(SC4). So - there will always be a problem raising TV money.
Also, the fact that Welsh teams are regions rather than clubs.
The inclusion of the 2 Scottish teams could work and, would
probably be welcomed by teams such as Newcastle.
Also, including Scottish teams in the Championship would
probably also be a good idea.

The drop off from Glasgow and Edinburgh to the Scottish
Premiership is quite big and I wonder if even the best 3/4 would
be consistently competitive in the Championship. Unlike the two
Pro teams who would be competitive at Premiership level. With
around 2/3rds of the wider Scotland squad split between them
they would provide good competition.

I'd rather have Wasps and LI back - bringing in Welsh/Portuguese
or whom ever etc teams in is a red herring - it won't sort out
the problems RFU have.
Had the SA clubs joined in with English sides, then that might
have worked - whether or not the RFU would want such a thing, I
have no idea - I suspect not.

No idea about the RFU but I'd be pretty pissed off. I don't
think they should be playing in the European Cups. Mind you,
they're pretty much devalued now anyway.

I agree - I had just taken it as fait accompli that they would
be in the Euro comps. But I was thinking crowds and support. But
I'm just wandering like a cloud through the different threads.
While watching RWC games over the last few months, it is easy to
see why it is hard to attract more followers - they find the
rules/laws impenetrable - like the Bokke defence. If they ask a
part time follower (about something) they get one answer and a
different one from someone that plays/refs - they just give up
murmuring "bloody egg chasers" as they wander off to the bar.
And then a ref on the telly appears to do something inconsistent
and no-one knows where they are...
