The Lions are the best of the best. You get picked for them,
it's the best of 4 nations, not just one (unless Gatland is
coach). I don't support them over Quins but I'm really disturbed
to hear how little the powers that be are willing to bend to
accommodate them.

Yes, absolutely. They are everything that's good about rugby in
that all country allegiances go out of the window for the only
time in 4 years. 50k+ people travel around the world to watch
them. The receiving country loves them. And there is (arguably)
more pride in getting a Lions cap than any other.
Personally I find it scandalous that, because it doesn't benefit
them, the home nations RFU are trampling over the Lions.

The Times today suggests that there is some flexibility in the
calendar and the Premiership will make an extra week available
for the Lions provided they are paid a large amount of money.

They have now -- but only because of the pressure. They weren't
before, they were handing out buckets and asking fans to give a
few quid without giving anything themselves.
The crucial bit you've missed is where they admit they messed it
up.
Quotes are same on Guardian, BBC, etc etc.
A WRU spokesperson added: “We have listened to supporters and,
while our initial motivation in supporting the My Name’5 Doddie
Foundation was to help raise awareness for the fight against MND
and the foundations’ fundraising campaign, we have decided to
make a direct donation.”
And a Scottish Rugby spokesman added: "We have listened to the
feedback from the rugby family in relation to extending our
support around the autumn Test match in Cardiff and have
partnered with the WRU in a commitment to guarantee the
foundation receives a six-figure donation. We are happy to
provide a further level of support to Doddie and his foundation
through this initiative and to mirror the generosity of fans."
The news was welcomed by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation
trustees chairman, Scott Hastings. “We would like to thank the
Welsh Rugby Union and Scottish Rugby for this significant and
very welcome decision, which will add even more to the financial
benefits we are grateful to be receiving from this weekend,”
Hastings said.
