Some lovely moves in the first half, we could have had one or
two more tries. I am so pleased we hung on in defence and
managed to nullify their breaks. We needed a score of any type
in the second half to build on our good start. How wonderful was
it to see Dommers win that penalty at the end?! Brilliant.
2 games in, the scrum looks solid, the defence looks improved
and the lineout is reliable.
Let's just see what we can do in attack. There is some promise.
Porter and Launchbury have been good additions. Joseph too.
Baxter is going to be a great loosehead for us.

I wouldn't say I had clear view but there was some obvious
blocking/obstruction by Exeter on Green and when he jumped he
was still in a valid position to compete but was off-balance and
so nudged Hodge off too. Listening on the ref mic it was all
cleared as a good challenge but they didn't want to put it on
the screen for some reason (they did the same last year with the
incident that took Green out, so maybe it just wasn't pretty/too
distressing).

Luke was talking to his father (?) by the tunnel after the game
having emerged on crutches. Judging by the look on his face and
the following embrace he may be out again for a while.
Happened right in front of us and his ankle appeared to twist on
a section of the pitch which had already been badly cut up.
Given how good the growing conditions have been compared to
other years I was surprised at how badly the pitch cut up.

Sadly both teams came away with injuries to key players. Hodge
(who looked really sharp seeing him live for the first time)
apparently dislocated his elbow in the collision with Tyrone
(according to the Exeter staff we spoke to after the game). From
what we could see live (and again it happened just in front of
us), a card seemed likely but according to neighbours with
access to the Ref Mic, the 4th Official judged it to be a fair
competition and play on.

Hodge dislocated his elbow when he got trapped in a really
awkward position and about eight people fell on top of him. Poor
guy.

Had a word with Hodge at half time. He was very shaky and white
as a sheet. Was hoping he wasn't going to be out too long but he
was hurting.

Main takeaway from yesterday is that we really do have viable
options other than DC and Marcus at 9 and 10 now. Thought Porter
and Evans were brilliant - and, crucially, look like they will
provide perfect continuity for our style whenever DC and Marcus
are unavailable. Great signings.

No game plan, too many players picked on reputation and no
creativity!!!........sorry, still in WC mode
Overall a really good performance. Loved the back row and
Launchbury going 80 and still chucking his body about. David
growing on me a bit more, has definitely bulked up. Tyrone still
not sharp but will improve. Lynagh's finish was great (poor
defence aside) but he needs to work on his tackling, still.
One thing about jEV, he seems to have a bit of Dan Biggar about
him, in that he comes out of every contact holding a wrist,
shoulder or rib but manfully say's he'll carry on. Let's hope
that doesn't hang around for too long :-)

Baxter had (another) very strong game imo. Great in the loose
and neutralised Painter in the scrum. If he can keep this form
up, he should be rotating with Joe for the starting shirt.
Lynagh needs to fix his tackling if he wants consistent minutes
and any higher honours. Must have been bumped 4/5 times
yesterday.

I would put neutralizing Painter as a very low bar.
But that is not something you can hold against Baxter, you do
not get to choose who you play against.

Porter is a massive upgrade on Gjaltema. Quick and accurate
passing from the base of the ruck and decent game management off
the boot.
If he stays fit I think Launchbury is a transformational signing
for us. Felt we've lacked a bit of edge in the pack since Symons
left. Launchbury brings that but his work at the set-piece,
particularly at maul time, is top drawer.
Watching yesterday and it looks like Baxter has worked really
hard during pre-season. He looks leaner and meaner. Dropped a
bit of podge and packed on a little more muscle.
