You can have the biggest pool of excellent young players, and
the best pipeline, but if the coach doesn't select them or has a
       terrible game plan, it's irrelevant.

In my view, Borthwick selected this squad to execute a pragmatic
game plan and make the most of the RWC draw - and it very neatly
worked. He will have a new attack coach, and a new game plan for
       the next RWC cycle.
I for one will withhold judgement until the hybrid contract
players are selected. That's the real statement of intent

That's all well and good against teams that won't be able to
step up a gear or dig deep and find a way to win. How do you
think that would have gone against NZ next week?

I think this England side would have given the All Blacks a game
as well. It wouldn't have been pretty, but the same line speed
and commitment at the breakdown would have put pressure on their
game plan. I also think Smith would have been back in the side
to add some pace in attack.
NZ would still be favourites, but in a one off game you never
       know.
A lot of critics are raising the bar game on game. Most
predictions before the game were for a big Bol win, but it was
one penalty - that could have gone the other way - between the
       two sides.

A lot of critics said we wouldn’t beat Argentina
A lot of critics said we wouldn’t get out of our group
A lot of critics said we wouldn’t beat Fiji
A lot of critics said we wouldn’t get close to SA
Even if we had won the whole thing, I fear a lot of critics
would’ve still complained we did it playing dull rugby.
If at any point since Borthwick took over, somebody had said we
would have been unbeaten in the World Cup until the semi final
where we lose by 1 point to world’s number #1 team and that we
are only behind for the last 2 minutes, I’m not sure many
       would’ve believed it.
Yet still there are those who refuse to credit this coaching
ticket or this team for their achievements.
It’s always about how badly the oppo played.
Would the same XV have taken the field or played the same game
plan if the oppo were Ireland, France or NZ? I’m guessing not.
For me, Borthwick showed with the Fiji game v last night that he
will pick horses for courses and a style to match.

For me the thing is could we have done better by picking players
on form rather than reputation and playing a quicker more
       attacking style of rugby.
Even in the semi, could Ford and Lawrence have been bought on
when we were ahead to stretch the lead rather than try to defend
       a slender one.

It's a good achievement to get to the last 4 in the RWC. Let's
not forget a really cack 6N and a pathetic warm-up series
though, and let's not ignore the conservative and boring rugby
       played.

       It can be both.
As for praising his selection, he also selected the
       replacements.

So which replacements would you have selected in their place?
And how would you have coached them to get on the side of a
southern hemisphere ref who was clearly more comfortable with SH
       scrummaging styles?
