Agreed. And I guess that’s my point. I think the tightheads
who’ve been around the England camp since 2016 (possibly before)
are all over 30. With Cole likely to be gone after this World
Cup, who comes into the 6N?
Do we go for a stopgap like JFR or Davison? As MQ says, who’s
coming through?
We have a beast at Sale (James Harper) who’s 23 and been talked
about for the past couple of years. But he’s only now starting
to get more regular game time. And was part of a sub front row
who did not do well on Sunday.

We've had a generaton of props who broke through early and have
dominated the international game for a decade or more, but who
are now coming to the end of the road.
The question is whether they've been holding back some players
who can now step up, or whether it means that clubs have been
taking the time to develop the props who are now coming through.
I hope it's the latter. Baxter looks like he could be the
natural successor to Marler, but we've not seen that much of him
since he first emerged. I hope that's because Bomb has been
taking the time to get him ready for prime time and we will see
him step up this season.
Sounds like the same may have been happening with Harper. I
wonder who else is out there and likely to emerge. I'd hope that
Borthwick will begin rebuilding earlier than Eddie did.

Since the NZ v Arg game seems to be drifting towards the
expected result, I’ve been having a look around at Prem teams’
squads.
From what I can see the English tightheads who are established
but not in the current England squad and are still under 30 are:
Marcus Street
Ehren Painter
Alex Carey
Paul Hill
Joe Heyes
Somewhat depressing.

Quite a few if you include academy players but regular 1st XV
players? The ones I mentioned above plus the 3 in France are
about it, I think.

Steve Borthwick made the point that England had move players
under 25 than any of the other semi-finalists. True, but only
just.
The real question is where is the production line of talent to
replace them, not just at prop, but in the other key positions.
Steve may well say, that is not my job, and technically he may
be right, though it is his job to have a plan to win the next
World Cup.
But the structure of the RFU is so opaque, I am not sure who
should be on the hook for producing the talent, or what power
they have to make the Premiership clubs work with them.
The Unions that own their franchises, can influence selection,
and tell them to play a local youngster over an established
import. But the RFU, at least under the current PGA, cannot do
that. Maybe Hybrid contracts will change that.

The player pipeline is, I think, part of COS's remit, but the
RFU don't have complete control over players at present. The
hybrid contracts are designed to address that, and it will be
interesting to see how much the players selected represent the
future rather than the immediate squad. I would hope that all of
the players selected are under 30 and expected to be the core of
the next RWC squad.
