I think Faz doesn't play the journalists as well as he might. He
always strikes me as quite grim projecting an air of not wanting
to be there. Every player ever asked about him seems to have
nothing but praise for his dedication and work ethic. They all
seem to say he's a thoroughly nice bloke off the field .

Most of the criticism I see relates to him as a player, not as a

Yep. I'm told by people who know him that he's a really nice
guy. It's not unusual for people to have an on-field persona
that differs from their usual self.

is it that he just has this sort of air about him, maybe a
little bit sneery to the oppo, maybe a bit stiff in media
relations that sort of thing....comes across as a little bik
arrogant even if he isnt...? Plus his kick for position strength
is not universally popular nor his ability to tackle like a
goalpost...

I think with most players in that high profile a role you get to
know a bit more of their personality on and off the field and
that for good or bad buys these guys a bit of slack. I feel like
I know way more about Finn Russell, Sam Warburton (when he was
playing), Sexton and friends than I've ever known about OF.
Faz clearly (and understandably really) doesn't want to go in
for the media game in a way that the likes of DC, Marler etc
have gone for. I think as England captain these days, you do
have a certain responsibility to be more open and Faz isn't.
England's sporadic performances over the last few years also
means his credit with many supporters, particularly non Sarries
is limited.
I have no doubt that DC is being genuine. He's also a very
senior player with a media profile and nothing to prove in the
game.

I'd prefer all players to have Faz's reticence to speak to the
media.

I think it is a little like how every other club's fans felt
about Mike Brown. Really competitive, confrontational and
unapologetic about it. Also have great longevity, so around
long enough for everyone to learn what they love/hate about you.
In Farrell's case I count myself among those who have
criticised aspects of his game (I was also aware that Brownie
wasn't as fast as Nick Abendanon either).
Fans are also aware that neither are arguably the most exciting,
flair option in their position for the England team - even if
they are international class. The flipside in the fly-half case
is that Marcus (as the "maverick" option) also gets a huge
amount of stick for not being robust like Farrell. Basically
you can't win either way...unless you drop a goal in world cup
final extra-time.

To be fair, Wilko was pretty much the complete package as a fly
half, especially for the era. He was the first to combine
precision execution of a full range of distribution skills
(including amazing accuracy at putting the ball in the corner
from the penalties he did't put through the posts), with
ultra-reliable goalkicking (the weird inability to get on with
2011 RWC balls aside) and a level of defence that probably only
Farrell approaches (and lest we forget, quite a few of Jonny's
best tackles would have been carded today). He was also very
capable of creativity - though having Greenwood and Catt around
him certainly helped in that regard.
My main criticism of Farrell has been that he doesn't bring that
level of creativity in most of his international play. I have
long felt that he plays best with a creative player alongside
him, whether that's Ford at 10 or Care at 9. His tackling has
always run very close to the boundary of what's legal - but like
Lawes (who is lauded for it) he has only rarely crossed it.
The comparison with Mike Brown is quite apt. It has been funny
watching some of the more strident Tigers fans learning to love
having him in their team.

Reminds me of the older debates about whether Stuart Barnes or
Rob Andrew should be fly half - Andrew for his kicking or Barnes
for his creativity/distribution.
