An utterly dire performance.
I don’t buy the “he needs time”. That’s only true if you can see
positives coming through that just need to be polished, in terms
of coaching and style of play. He’s had a few games now and we
would see the foundations and start to say something along the
lines of “the base is there just needs to develop players”.
The fact is, that style of play SB and the coaches are
implementing shows they aren’t right for the job and are still
stuck in the “what works for Sarries/Tigers?”. Our basic skills
are some of the worst I’ve seen out of any team in the World
Cup, and we create nothing.
SB has already demonstrated he is inept by his selections, so
it’s not a case of he has nothing to work with. May spends his
time running sideways and offers nothing, BV is poor, Ford and
Faz does not work, the list goes on.
The fact he has two starters who originally weren’t even in
contention (May/Mitchell)… leaving the only 8 on the bench
playing a flanker at 8 instead..as well as changing the XV
constantly shows he hasn’t got a clue.
Fiji probably will win, but if we scrape past them, the RFU will
applaud it and we will see him for the foreseeable. I genuinely
think we will ship about 40+ points against any of the “big
boys”.

Yes. the best thing for England medium-term would be to get
absolutely obliterated next week.

This. Scraping past Fiji would be enough for the RFU and Sweeney
to tell us again we are on the cusp of greatness.
The reality is if we lost badly to France or SA the attitude
will be “well it is (nation) anyway” rather than look at the
bigger picture why we aren’t playing like most tier 1 nations

Care was worth 14 points to England in 15 minutes of playing
time, and pretty much all of England's decent attacking play
came once Marcus was on the pitch (and Marchant back at 13). I
thought both of them made a strong case for what they can offer.
As to whether that will sway Borthwick's selection thinking
remains to be seen, but each of them has been on the bench
pretty consistently throughout the pool stages. Unless Youngs
starts, I'd expect Care to make the bench; he has always been a
better option to change the game in the last quarter than
Youngs.
Borthwick's team really seem to like Smith as the finishing
fullback too, though it depends a lot on who is and isn't fit.
Match reports mostly said that Manu went off injured, which
would force a different starting lineup if he's not recovered in
time.

The worry is that England will be complacent.
We saw what happened to a complacent Fiji.
Fiji, will now not be complacent, and possibly back to the
commitment levels of August and the Australia match.
