Why should the RFU be funding the Championship anyway? Because
Mike Gooley doesn't like spending his money?
All I hear/read around the place are people moaning at the lack
of funding and TV deals without ever suggesting where the money
might come from or why someone might want to lose money
broadcasting the Championship.

Mmm. I'm not sure the strategic priority of "supporting clubs to
sustain and grow themselves" is aimed at the small number of
professional teams. I suspect their priority is this bunch:

and
money spent on the teams that are spending the most is money not
spent on the community game.
This is a pretty telling article from when Jersey were in strife
a few years back:

Two things to note: the suggestion that they were spending north
of £1m a year on player wages with gates of ~2000, and the view
of "the Premiership is the land of riches" by the Jersey
Football guy, which is part of the problem - teams gambling on
a) getting to the Prem and b) staying in the Prem and spending a
lot of money to do so.
I do think the RFU should fund it better but not to the extent
that clubs like this require to keep going, because that's a
financial black hole and thanks to their own incompetence, the
RFU doesn't actually have all that much money to throw about.
We know the Premiership is unsustainable and that's not the
RFU's fault. The Championship, for some clubs, is a mini version
of the Premiership and that's also not the RFU's fault. Totally
agree the confusion of structure, the lack of a sensible pathway
or vision for how the pyramid should work at the top few levels,
and the zombie-like responses to crises are all definitely the
RFU's fault.

I read somewhere that they had been funded by someone for some
years and that they'd just decided to pull out. No details,
though.

Very sad indeed and while I agree that they clearly had an
unsustainable business model, there was also a cut in funding
from the RFU, I am sure they had (in their eyes) valid reasons.
Without a successful and supported 2nd and 3rd tier we lose
strength in the Prem and National team.
I do wonder how Ealing can get the players they do and survive
they surely can’t make that much money.

Certainly is. It's largely why I think blaming the RFU for
investors having cold feet is somewhat missing the point that
no-one with any sense invests in rugby as an actual investment.
I'm not sure the situation at Jersey is exactly how they have
described it.

Agreed
it is the modern world where people want to blame everyone else
when a business fails becaise they are paying more than the
income
No one wants to listen to Mr Macawber these days

Jersey RFC are top of Regional South Central which is the same
league as Salisbury RFC who I watch and we're due over there in
3 weeks.
Apparently the Jersey Reds situation will have no affect on
Jersey RFC as the two clubs split last year.
