Jersey Reds have ceased trading and entered administration, with
receivership likely to follow.

That’s a huge shame and another big team out of the
Championship. Have they overspent hoping for promotion which
never came?

VERY bad news for all involved with Jersey and for Rugby too.
Jersey were the best side in the Championship. This is a
worrying development
for Tier 2 clubs,

This is terrifically sad, and somewhat surprising given the
widely held perception that Jersey is a wealthy island.

Not a surprise sadly.
The RFU are a disgrace.
The lack of care and attention given to the game while they
feather their own nests and worry about some wokery or other
means the game is to all intents and purposes down the tubes. It
won't be long before there is no pro rugby at this rate......

Why is it the RFU's responsibility to bail out failed businesses
that own rugby clubs? And how exactly are they feathering their
own nests?

Right. There's a lot of kneejerk anger at the RFU, and I'm sure
there's some blame to be had, but where's the anger at Jersey
for running a wildly unsustainable business? The only difference
between them and London Welsh is that LW had their season
getting spanked in the Premiership before it all fell apart.
We've seen this all before.
The article certainly hints at them having been in financial
strife for some time, well before COVID hammered everyone.
Professional rugby in this country is an absolute mess and there
is plenty of blame to go around. It does, unfortunately, need a
complete reset, including a reality check for every owner, for
PRL, and for the fans.
It's genuinely rubbish news when a side like this disappears. I
feel for the players and the fans, and it's going to be
extraordinarily difficult for many people to continue their
careers. I am not solely pointing the finger at the club; it's
clear they're only doing what a number of sides (including every
Premiership side) are doing. But it seems pretty disingenuous of
them to claim they can't afford to pay salaries because of
uncertainty regarding the league structure.

JG, you and BB are right that it's not the RFU's job to manage
club finances or bail out clubs that have overspent. It
absolutely is their job, however, to create an environment in
which clubs can sustain and grow themselves (it's one of their
own eight strategic priorities). Massive cuts to funding for the
Championship, making promotion an increasingly unlikely prospect
and failing to develop any kind of proper strategy for the
Championship doesn't help clubs to either plan a sustainable
business or attract investment for growth, so I think at least
some of the opprobrium levied at the RFU, however knee-jerk, is
still warranted.
