Would think the Council plus the RFU would DEFINITELY want the
extra revenue tbh!!!! Residents will moan & groan but dosh
always talks...HOW much is the RFUs deficit????

I said this, the last time this came around - it'll never
happen.
It's the midweek games that makes it unworkable - 80k fans
arriving during rush hour & then leaving for the train, at
10-10:30, possibly 10 times a season, I don't see it.
It'll be Wembley or the Olympic stadium for sure. Bear in mind,
they haven't even got to a design yet, let alone detailed
planning, so it's a wafty argument at the moment in any case.

"Would moan & groan"...well yes, because to offset the "you knew
there was a stadium there when you moved there" argument, we
also knew how many times it was going to be used a year. And
when you say residents, you're also talking about the Council,
because the effect on the area would be massive - and I'd be
amazed if you could get the backing to get it approved.
Away from the money they'd get and if they'd approve in
principle, nothing here is built to support a football
stadium/crowd.
Chelsea is a minimum of 21 home games, but only if they were
knocked out of both domestic cups on their first appearance. So
let's call it a lower-end of 24. More if they're in Europe (not
likely at the moment....LOLZ). The infrastructure just isn't
here to support that many people coming and going that many
times in a year.
And on top of the sheer size of that volume change in terms of
policing, steward, stadium staff etc, there's nothing in place
to support football crowds specifically. You can probably
segregate the stadium entrances and exits relatively easily
(presume the RFU would want someone else to pay for this)....but
what about the rest of it...
Train station -- still carnage even post expansion after a rugby
match - now factor in the police having to keep opposing fans
apart.
Even the pubs -- Chelsea are a club who have designated away fan
pubs...groups of away fans are also escorted to and from the
ground depending on police decisions on the day.
Speaking of which, as I think of it, you'd also have no west fan
village so that revenue is not going to be like a rugby match
each time, plus the bars in the stadium wouldn't be able to open
in the same way. (Brentford for example, had no alcohol
available to away fans when it opened).
Plus - Brentford. Brentford games have crowd/transit knock on in
Richmond, Kew, Chiswick, Isleworth. So do you have to schedule
Brentford and Chelsea to never play a home game on the same day?
Probably. Imagine those same trains/bus routes/pubs juggling
fans of four different football clubs.
I love football (not Chelsea, I'm human after all) but the sheer
size and complexity of the changes plus the residents/council
likely opposition make it seem pretty impossible.
More pertinently, as others observe, this story comes up this
time every year and prompts this exact discussion.

I thought that there was always difficulty with ground-sharing
with football teams due to this regulation:
"K.4 No Club shall have or enter into a ground-sharing agreement
unless the agreement contains a legally enforceable provision to
the effect that the playing of the Club's League Matches shall
always take precedence over the activities of the other party to
the agreement".
So, it could mean that, for example, a Six Nations match would
have to be moved from Twickenham if Chelsea were due to play on
the same day.
(This is why Ospreys are due to play Sharks at The Stoop.)

it's not just the capacity but it's the mix of corporate tickets
that makes it less than ideal. The newer stadia at EG Spurs and
Arsenal have dedicated corporate areas which will maximise
revenues per game. Income per game is:
Manchester United
Arsenal
Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea
Manchester City
so over a 25 game season, that's £50M extra that United have. Of
course, it's relatively small beer against the TV revenues but
it's still a chunk. This ignores secondary incomes from summer
gigs/events and so on.
As a Chelsea fan, and Twickenhamite, it would be fantastic for
me, but I just don't see it. potentially 4 years of going to ***
Wembley :(
