RWC23 Anthems

“Feedback from the unions we consulted was positive,” France
2023 CEO Julien Collette said.
“This retains the voices of the children. Children will be
present in the stadium. All the unions choose the recorded
version in conjunction with the fans and teams. We believe it is
very important that the children and their supervisors receive a
very warm welcome in the stadiums.”
He added: “The anthems were tested, and each version signed off
in advance by the unions.
“The effect of the chorus, combined with 80,000 fans in the
Stade de France on Friday, created a bit of confusion in the
experience, so that led to us taking the decision to use a
version more in sync with the fans, without having the effect of
juxtaposing the voices.”

I missed La Marseillaise last night but I've heard/read that it
was a vast improvement.

To be fair, I thought some of the original batch worked okay. It
depended on the balance in the anthem between tune and lyrics.
The ones where the lyrics are the dominant part (e.g. France,
SA, NZ, etc) the choirs were able to launch directly into & they
were okay. Where the tune is initially the dominant part (eg
Argentina with a minute of tune before the singing comes in) or
the tune is the dominant feature throughout, the choirs really
struggled to make an impact.

Interesting. I heard that the rendition of La Marseillaise at
the NZ game was dreadful and the French were really pissed off
about it.

They were fairly poor for both games in Marseille (although the
Scottish fans sang really well) but much better last night in
Lille (as was the organisation in general).
