The basic rule is that new additions to the squad during the
competition are only allowable to replace injured players who
are ruled out for the remainder of the competition. Whether
there's any leeway given to the front row, (given that it is
physically dangerous to play someone who hasn't played in that
position before) hasn't been tested. All the other positions in
a XV can be played by someone with little or no experience
(locks swapping with back rows, centres with wings/FB, FB with
FH, Scrum half filling in the centres, etc). That's the reason
why players like Daly and Marchant get included as they offer
not only good performances at their preferred position, but can
also cover other roles as needed.
The squads were increased for this years' competition to 33 from
the previous 31. This was ostensibly to accommodate better
player welfare management, but it has the knock-on effect of
allowing the Coach to pick a couple more specialised players for
the key positions & not have to cope with a player being
unavailable due to suspension by playing a someone in a position
they've never played before (unless they want to experiment
with, say Smith at full back...).

Its horrible. English rugby is not going to get thousands of new
fans at this stage of the competition. Stop talking down to your
audience, we know the laws.

Won't happen but Borthwick needs to have the guts to drop
Farrell and stick with Lawes as Captain for the big games.
However I can see him going back to Ford/Farrell/Tualagi which
worked well 4 years ago but would be a backwards move now IMO

I was 'out of it' at the stoop Saturday, so hot in the lowers
east stand, forgot how much ice cold Guinness I was drinking and
passed out on the train to Waterloo. Thank god Waterloo was the
last stop.

That’s how it was… but with the increased risk of red cards and
bans I’d have thought there must be a provision of some sort.
I’ve searched for tournament regulations and not been able to
find a link. If you have one, please do share.
