Looking at the link, I hadn't realised there will also now be a
"GB" team instead of each of the home nations

It is probably to bring in line with the fact the GB Team
participate in the Olympics.

Funny how confidence from the RFU results in exactly the
opposite from everyone else.

None of the Home nations can afford to fund a sevens team.
The England team was being bankrolled by sponsorship from a
company called Secure Trading.
Who also sponsored Old Elthamians.
The owner died apparently owing £40 million, including
substantial amounts to the RFU and a lesser amount to Old
Elthamians.
Old Elthamians could not find a new sponsor and were forced to
withdraw from the leagues.
The RFU could not find a new sponsor either, and cut the team.
The press called it an over reaction to Covid-19.

Went to the 7's once. By the time I got there Quins had got
knocked out already but I did enjoy watching the Army side.

7s just doesn't really garner much interest these days, it's
certainly not for me. I don't know any rugby fans with club
season tickets/memberships at any level that have anything more
than a passing interest in 7s.

The old club sevens was a rugby crowd - as every Middlesex club
had their supporters there - not just the finalists. It was in
May, so it was an end of season event. However, it was a charity
event - so it did not make money for the RFU.
But the Premiership 7s and the International 7s had a very
different feel. The RFU marketing department essentially sold
them as a day out in the sunshine with beer - and possibly some
rugby.

I have a lot of happy memories of the old Middlesex 7s - Wigan's
win in the aftermath of professionalisn, the year Nick Easter
played because he hadn't had any preseason games (and was
basically unstoppable if he got the ball anywhere in the
opposition 22 but far too slow in defence), and the year that
Danny kept getting carded (and I got to write a review that
began "Of all sad words of Rose and Quin / The saddest are
these: 'Danny Care's got another pointless yellow. Again'")
Even better was when Quins would use the Rosslyn Park Floodlit
7s for academy development and senior rehab, and the other
seniors would come down to support and mingle with the crowd.
One year it was about a week after the famous victory in Thomond
Park and it was great to congratulate the players in person.

I for one have more than a passing interest in 7's, its the
rubbish that has grown up around the modern version (all in the
interest of promotng rugby per se apparently) is what I hate.

I went to the World Sevens which was a good day out on the
Sunday. Only half the crowd of Saturday so may have been more
tolerable. Looks like my first and last time. I also went to the
Roslyn Park event for the first time and really enjoyed the
evening. Some lovely skills on show.
I would say I preferred the Park one more as the games
were as good as Twickenham but you could buy food and beer for
Rugby club prices. I didn’t buy any food and drink at Twickenham
(poor value) but had some pints and food at Park.
I can imagine that the carnage that occurred in Twickenham
after the Middlesex Sevens would upset many locals having
witnessed much of it when I was a young lad. In fact we ended up
not bothering going to Twickenham or Richmond on those days.
