Eddie and Borthwick have both preferred Porter to other options,
so they must be seeing something in him that we aren't. I'd
agree with you that he's been pretty anonymous in his chances to
date - but to be fair they have been in a team that has been in
some disarray across the patch.

There are barely any decent English 12s, that's the problem.

Eddie has had many, many bizarre picks before. Borthwick has
shown huge faith in Tigers players and is conservative enough to
keep most of Eddie's choices. I'm not sure Eddie plus Eddie Jr
selecting him in consecutive squads says all that much about
him.
Just very annoying that the WC chances of a fair few players
hinge on the performance of a mediocre player playing out of
position. Hope springs eternal.

I'm certain if Andre was English he would have been turned into
an 8.
I actually think Simmonds would have been a good 12 with the
right training

Remember, Jack Clifford could outpace many centres, when in his
prime condition.

Simmonds has shown absolutely no ball skills, though. Not even
for an 8.
The One That Got Away is, imo, Mallinder. He never seemed a good
fit for 15 or 10 but I could see him making a fist of playing 12
just like Jordie Barrett. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure
Ireland/Wales/Scotland would've happily given guys like
Lozowski, Sam James, Mark Atkinson, and Devoto far more of a
look-in at international level.
(The other Atkinson, Seb, is my bolter for England's next best
12 when Farrell retires - I think he's got the goods already)

Clifford started as a centre - and I'd guess he was still faster
and more skilful than most EQP centres even once he picked up
his injury. The problem was that his shoulder didn't hold up in
contact, which wouldn't have impacted his speed.
Musing a bit, I wonder if we converted him to No 8 in part
because Nick Easter was getting on and JTH was expected to hold
down the IC berth for far longer than he did. I wonder how
different things might have been if he had stayed a centre?

We might have started him there as a developing player, but I
know from seeing him play school rugby that he played 6 or 8
(often up an age group) most of the time. That he was originally
a 12 is largely myth. Unbelievable talent who should be
spearheading this England side but for injury.
England could have prime greenwood playing 12 at the moment and
he’d still be dropping it. So many handling errors.
