National Anthems

Well I think New Zealand just edged that one. Interesting both
anthems sung by men. Always prefer men singing, even when the
lovely Camilla sung ours.

Yes, it reminded me of Sir Clive and his "respond by the
youngest player dropping a leaf" or whatever....
I think the only thing that depowers the Haka is 60,000(ish)
English supporters singing "Swing Low"

I liked it when Chabal just growled back. And when Kobus Wiese
went nose to nose with Lomu.

Well, I think England could have been closer in score to the All
Blacks, but that pressure was unrelenting and Australia couldn't
handle it in the end.
Having a new untested no 10 didn't help and Australia's
discipline let them down, 2 yellow cards during the match.

I think the 1989 Irish team might wish to respectfully debate
that point with you!

I watched the match in a pub in Cardiff. I was getting a round
in before kick-off, and the roar that went round the pub when
they started stomping forwards was insane! Like everyone else
still at the bar, I was convinced they'd already started, and
Ireland had scored an early try!
They still went on to lose, of course, but all the same, it's a
really strong counterpoint to the current position of World
Rugby fining teams for responding! There's a pretty good article
about it, and a little bit of LinkedIn sleuthing suggests that
the 13yr old ball boy who ran onto the pitch to point the ref to
his assistant's raised flag, thus getting an ABs try chalked off
has gone on to become Head of Corporate and International
Affairs at the IRFU, so it didn't do him any harm!

Alternately you could just act like grown ups respect each other
and get on with it:

But each to his own level.

Am I right in thinking that teams have to stand and respect the
glorified morris dancing? They're not allowed to simply ignore
it?

Why should opposing teams respect a marketing gimmick or indulge
in something designed to give one team a pre-match advantage.
These guys need to get over themselves and realise they're just
playing rugby.
It's like when England get the armed forces in to motivate them.
You're playing sport, not going to war
It was nice that at the end of England's anthem today, they
final note was lower, as it should be. Normally whoever they
have wailing it at Twickenham finishes on a higher note,
presumably just to show off their prowess

The rules are very strict nowadays on how the team can respond
to the Haka. But apart from pleas to "respect " the Haka,
there's nothing they can do for the crowd.
And actually,it's a trap for the All Blacks because usually the
Twickenham crowd is very quiet/respectful. The Haka gets
Twickenham man (and woman and anyone in between) fired up early
to find their singing voice..
