Hard one to understand. Murley’s the form winger in the prem.
Top try scorer, back to back prem team of the year, most clean
breaks 2 years in a row, high for defenders beaten too.
Malins, Watson, Daly, and Arundell all have prem experience of
playing wing and fullback and maybe Borthwick wants players who
have that versatility, that’s all I can really think of going
against him.
May over Murley I really do not understand though

I don't think anyone can justify the selection of May, second
half of the season he wasn't even the best winger at his own
club.
The obsession with having utility players is baffling. Sure they
are handy, but Daly is not good enough at the highest level in
any one particular position for a start. Just play the best
players in their best positions which they've demonstrated week
in week out.

Murley also finds time to hit more rucks than any other back
three player and has a decent tackle %.
But to be fair, May has experience of playing both wings at the
same time (after Daly's red against Argentina), and if he's fit
he's a better contender as a kick-chaser than Murley (as is
Marchant, who's still with the squad). On the utility player
point, the RWC is different from other competitions in that
regard: because the squad is pretty small (a matchday XXIII plus
10) and the only way to change the squad is to make a permanent
swap, there's a premium on having players who can cover a couple
of positions in a pinch.
Borthwick looks likely to to take 3 in each of the key
specialist positions - front row, scrum half, fly half (ok, 2
specialist fly halves and a 10/12) - which means nearly half the
squad is taken up with covering those positions, and only 18
slots to cover 10 positions. If the aim is to have at least 3
players who can cover each place in the squad, players who can
cover multiple spots in the back 5 of the scrum or the outside
back positions are very valuable in that context.
I do think Murley's time will come if he keeps playing the way
he is, and I generally lean towards the view that an RWC is not
usually the best time to give a player their introduction to
International rugby.

I can only imagine post RWC we will actually get to see
Smith/Murley and a few others to be "trusted" to shape the
future. Ie players such as George Martin, Pearson, Theo Dan etc
stepping up.
I imagine the starting line up against Argentina may well be
similar to:

I could also see Ford starting at 10, with Farrell at 12, and
then probably Lawrence/Tuilagi at 13. I also wouldn't be
surprised if BV leapfrogs Alex if he wants a power game
approach.

I'd shudder to see Mako's name on the teamsheet against a
scrummaging side like Argentina. Surely that's a match that's
tailor made for Marler?
Mind you, I think Marler should be part of the XXIII for any
tier 1 opposition, because we still don't have a better
scrummaging and defensive loosehead. Genge is a better all round
option now his scrummaging is up to scratch, but Joe is still
the guy you'd want facing off against the Bomb Squad.

He came on in the 6 nations and went backwards in the scrum, and
then in the loose did nothing, so I can't see what he brings.
VRR deserve to be in the squad by a country mile.

clocked as the fastest in the England backs in the clip they
shared of the players doing a 50m sprint? England might as well
pack up, then, because none of their backs are fast enough.

I don't know the difference between top level speed, mid level
speed and bottom level speed.
