I believe his contract would have expired at the end of the
2023/24 season.

It is always difficult to say. I update the squad list with
details as they are reported - but Quins never say how long the
contracts are running for.
They sometimes indicate that it is a longer extension. This
could mean 3 years, and a standard contract is 2 years. But, who
knows?

I'm guessing it's a couple more years on the current deal, so
end of the 25/26 season. The club normally include "long term"
if the deal is 3+ years, and we would want to sing from the
rooftops if we'd tied Smith down like that.
This leaves him 1 year out from the WC - either he's England's
no. 10 and can look for a bumper marquee contract from us, or
it's not worked out for him with England and he can go to
France/Japan and make some serious money.

Who moved to Sale a year ago (supposedly on a 3-year contract)
to be closer to his family.
It'd probably have to be a big payout for him to go

According to the Times, Borthwick told him he was a key player
in England's future.

Getting philosophical, Ruck are somewhat like Wittgenstein:
quite capable of writing something that flat out contradicts
everything they wrote earlier.

The concern with that is whether Borthwick is a big part of
England's future.

Wittgenstein and Ruck in the same sentence! Now there's an
unlikely first.
That said, it is a little known fact that the young Wittgenstein
played rugby for a South Tyrol Barbarians XV as a winger and
based a remarkable defensive record on being able to prove, at
crucial moments, that the ball did not in fact exist.

According to Ruck, Racing are poised to announce his signing
next week.

They'll look pretty silly when it turns out Racing actually
signed Heidegger.
