I think this is really promising. If it works properly, it could
be as effective as the ball-tracking in cricket.

Sounds interesting, if it works as designed then hopefully it
will speed up the current debacle of “try” “no try” calls by the
ref and the endless views of millions of angles deciding if the
ball is/isn’t over the line.
Could also be really useful when previously the ball is totally
obscured and underneath by a whole load of heffalumps (spot the
winger here!).
Not totally against technology improving the game as long as it
doesn’t lose its grass roots, however I feel I may be a little
too late on that one!

Knowing if the ball is over (or, in fact, on) the try line is
one thing but knowing whether it was properly grounded is surely
another?

From the Eng v Ire U20 match on Saturday, it worked pretty well
and unobtrusively. It was used to call a fair few (pretty
obvious - it was a windy day) stray lineouts but what was only
noticeable in hindsight was that I don't think a single forward
pass was referred to the TMO, despite some balls that looked
"distinctly flat" in real time (but OK on replay) and a couple
of cases where there looked to have been a knock on on a loose
ball.
I think what was happening was that the TMO was getting the real
time feed and able to tell the ref it was OK, so play on and no
stoppage for referral to the TMO. If that's the way it
continues, then I think it's working well.

Hopefully it will eradicate an idiotic referee who, when told by
the TMO that it's a "clear forward pass", and given a full
explanation for that, decides to ask for a "better angle". In
which case, none being available, said referee allows a blatant
non-try, resulting in a team losing the game as it was the last
play of the match and became the winning "score".
Hypothetically speaking. Or not.
