They might be giving people a bit of game time for this 3/4
playoff nothing game. They also could be bulking up the pack
against the Saffas.

England lose by 7 to SA in the 3rd/4th place playoff. Dominated
possession in the 2nd half but a series of stupid mistakes and a
complete inability to do the right thing after a break really
stymied their chances.
Slevin had a bit of a shocker at 10 and got worse as the game
continued. I still don't "get" his move to 10, honestly.
Cunningham-South made a lot of big carries but also threw a lot
of terrible offloads and got smashed a few times as you might
expect against an SA side. Carr scored a nice try but
disappeared a bit especially compared to CCS. Jibulu was a bit
of an improvement over the starting hooker, who was not good at
the basics. Cleaves barely touched the ball in the 2nd half (not
his fault).
Generally a display of poor decision making and a complete lack
of control from England, who played the entire second half like
the final whistle was going to go at any moment. SA were
excellent at the breakdown where England competed pretty well,
and their 10 had a superb game. Frustrating game to watch.
Chessum the younger a very impressive performer and captain.
Seems a genuinely natural leader and manages the ref really
well, too.

I haven’t seen the game but…
A Sale fan suggested that Nye Thomas had a bit of a mare. If
you’re saying that Slevin’s game was sub-optimal, that would be
both half backs being highlighted by their own fans.
Doesn’t suggest much fluidity in the game

To be fair to Slevin, he was excellent in the Ireland game and
did well in the Australia one until the team around him started
to tire. The choice to move him was entirely Tofty's, by the
sound of things, but was based on knowing him well and having
confidence in what he could do.
From what I saw, England's bigger problem was that they couldn't
get any fluidity in attack when confronted with a strong press
defence. I think part of that was down to the 12, who didn't
seem to do much to help his fly half out, but the wider running
lines were often confused with players standing in each others'
way and often not knowing where to pass.

coaches.

RFU age grade pathway process is renowened for coaching the
skill sets out of young players.

Yep, he was rightly hooked in the second half.
At times it reminded me of Mapletoft's early time as a coach at
Quins - a lot of low percentage plays, offloads to no one,
breaks with no support, etc. Hopefully he can upskill the u20s
the same way he did us.

Cleaves put in a lovely break for England's first try. His
opposite number - Jurenzo Julius - is a superb player already.

Random musing - not based on having watched any of the
tournament. Does the reduction in games for all clubs mean these
younger players are getting much less proper game time? So
should we expect the u20 team to be weaker in future?
