A cracking game between England U20 and Ireland U20 on Saturday
that ended in a 34-34 draw.
Of interest to Quins fans, Chandler Cunningham-South put in a
decent shift, though had less impact carrying than I had hoped
for, Nathan Jibulu had a good impact in both the set piece and
the loose when he came on (at 45 minutes, after Finn
Theobald-Thomas’s darts started to go astray).
But the plaudits should go to Connor Slevin, who was playing fly
half for the first time at U20 level and had a very good game,
running the show nicely and hitting a wide range of kicks from
some tricky angles. Considering that his opposite number has
started matches for Leinster, it was a decent first outing.
Beyond the Quins contingent, Sale’s loosehead Asher
Opoku-Fordjour put in a shift that suggests he could be in the
frame of the seniors before too long, and the currently
unattached Afolabi Fasogbon was not far behind on the tighthead
side.
More widely, it was played in fairly good spirits, but Ireland
suffered a yellow card for cynical interference at a ruck and
gave away a penalty try (which should, by the Laws, have drawn a
second yellow) moments later. Meanwhile, England gave away a
yellow card in the second half for a high tackle, and Ireland a
red in the last few minutes.
The yellow was on the new review system and could have been
upgraded to red on closer review by the TMO; in this case it
wasn’t.
We also saw the first use of the smart ball to detect forward
passes, which seemed to work very well. It picked up several
not-straight line outs (though to be fair they were pretty
obvious) and informed the ref in close enough to real time that
he could call it without delay, but on reflection the big
difference may have been a reduction in the use of the TMO -
there were several passes that would have been reviewed in a lot
of games that didn’t go to the TMO, presumably because the smart
ball had cleared them. Overall, I’d say it was successful.

I had some difficulty accessing it on Youtube.
From reading the comments on Twitter - it looked as though there
was some geo-blocking.
But - it did start working for the 2nd half.
Considering that it was very windy, Slevin is a very good kicker
from the tee.
Other points.
- I was pretty impressed by the ground. Considering that this
is played at just a high school - the facilities did look
impressive.
- The pitch was a bit muddy and looked a bit heavy underfoot.
Considering that parts of the Western Cape (including parts of
Paarl) were underwater and some towns (e.g. Vredendal) cut off a
few days ago - I think that they had done a good job to get the
pitch playable at all.

I think that the World Rugby site redirects you to Youtube.
I then had to "subscribe" to World Rugby.
Then, in the comments section in the video on Youtube, there is
another link - which you clicked on. But, still didn't work.
It was a little convoluted and I was struggling to do this on my
Chromecast.
But, the 2nd half "just worked". So, maybe there was something
wrong that they fixed.
It could also be due to the fact that I always use a VPN.
Basically, I am a Google One customer and they provide an
"always on" VPN service.

For me, Bryn Bradley put in the most impressive performance out
of our academy boys. Playing at 12 against NZ and looked
excellent. He has put some size on but his handling and
playmaking still remain a point of difference.

I watched the England game on their site but was geo-blocked
from watching one of the others. I tried various different
locations around the world with my vpn to no avail. Not that I
know anything about geo-blocking and vpns mind you.
