Yeah, I struggle to follow the convoluted ways in which Tabs has
been sacked and not moved to a different role that he and the
club are happy with.
Then again I think it's absolutely no surprise that our
"terrible" season (qualifying for the knockout stages in Europe,
6th in the League) came off the back of huge disruption to the
squad so perhaps I'm just not anti-Tabai enough.

I think the difference is fairly obvious? Taken at face value,
this is a wider strategic role that involves the various parts
of the internal pyramid (with the first XV at the top). Wanting
everyone pointing in the same direction, having unity of
approach and joined-up thinking throughout the club, in the same
way that (for example) everything at Leinster is a finely-tuned
machine geared towards the continued success of the 1st XV. You
could argue that a Director of Rugby is exactly that, but it
seems like that's usually very focused on the top end of that
pyramid.

The main difference is it's a job title that means nothing, is
very clearly not linked to the 1st XV matchday in terms of
selection or tactics - and is a sort of "make sure the academy
people learn something" kind of job you used to get in the civil
service when you're rubbish but they can't get rid of you.

Looked at objectively, it could be said that Director of Rugby
or General Manager aren't very descriptive titles.
I'd argue that the meaningfulness of the new title is probably
related to the observer's sentiments towards Tabs.

Well that's my point - the club is about far more than just the
1st XV selection & tactics. It's kinda weirdly retrograde to
think in just those terms - all of this other stuff does
actually matter and it's important that Quins gets it right.
If Quins didn't actually want him around and/or he didn't want
to be here there's an almost zero chance he'd still be here.
That's just not how professional sport works for coaches, and
that goes double for what we know about Matson as a person and
what we know about how Quins works as a club. By all means
celebrate the fact that he's moved away from responsibility for
the 1st XV if you feel that's a big positive, but let's not
invent "sacked but not really" to explain something that doesn't
actually need explaining.

As I recall, when Tabai was brought in, his role was as much
about coach development as it was about hands on coaching. His
job wasn't to be a conventional head coach, but mainly to
provide oversight and developmental advice to the young coaches
who had just lifted the trophy.
This reshuffle means that he's still doing that, with the day to
day head coach responsibility going back to Billy Millard (who
did a good job of it in the immediate post-Gustard period, but
at the expense of doing the wider DoR role).
The club's coaching structure has expanded quite a bit over the
last few years with the Premier 15s side now also part of the
picture. More coaches = more coach development, but at the same
time more coaches = smaller head coach role that now seems to be
compatible with the other DoR duties.
Quins' coaching structure is unconventional (and at times has
been quite experimental), and this looks to me more like they
are realigning the roles around the various coaches' skills and
interests than anything more.
As JG says, the top end of sports coaching can be ruthless - but
there are also plenty of examples of people who were successful
in one role but failed in a "more senior" one (John Kingston,
Paul Gustard [as defence coach], Stuart Lancaster... and Andy
Robinson [who was told by Woodward not to accept the England DOR
role because "the job you want is the job you have as Head
Coach"]).
Putting your talent where it can be best used is a positive for
me.

Not sure Matson deserves some of the flak he's getting. He came
in to a club whid just pulled off a miracle. Anything other than
a repeat could be considered failure.
In his first season, he improved one place in the league. Lost
in the semis, as we've done before, to a team with an unfair
advantage
The second season was disappointing. We were fine until big game
was cancelled then went on an awful run. Various factors. To say
a coach needs sacking because of a bad two / months is a bit
much.
A review is certainly welcome and if hope they have worked out
how to stop a similar slide next season. I'd have had no problem
if he'd stayed in place another season
The big question is can someone finally fix our lineout and
defence.

Does "largest" equate to "most expensive"?
