I don't think it's dying but, it is going through a transition.
Too much of it has been run on dreams and not enough on reality
since the end of the amateur era and a lot of clubs have not
done enough to grow support to even vaguely reach
sustainability. I don't much like BSKO and BG but I do see the
important role both play in pushing the club towards
sustainability. It did feel pre the previous salary cap which
involved the jacking up of the cap very quickly that
sustainability was on its way for many clubs. The arms race that
caused created meant that clubs were again having to play catch
up with their costs vs. revenue having just got back towards
sustainability.
Despite our relatively modest success we're now at the point
where The Stoop isn't really big enough for us from a standard
ticket or hospitality offering point of view. We could always do
more but I feel like as a club Quins has been strenously trying
to grow support for the best part of 20 years.We have some
innate advantages - a wealthy catchment, iconic brand and being
associated to 'The Home of Rugby' amongst other things. Our
owners also seem hands off and generous.
The nomadic clubs have always been the ones with difficulty
lurking not too far away, Irish never had a huge identity
rattling round the Mad Stad. It wasn't theirs, it never really
felt like theirs and it was on a retail park near the M4. The
move to Brentford has just catapulted them into an even more
competitive market. Ironically, Brentford's success has possibly
counted against them. The casual punter in that area now has a
Premiership football team with a real good news feeling to it to
support, further adding to the competition for the leisure
pound. Ealing would face the same problem if promoted. Ourselves
and Sarries are already established Premiership clubs, Richmond
and Scottish cater for a slightly more informal experience and
you've also got the likes of Rosslyn Park, Esher and Barnes as
active Nat 1, Nat 2 clubs in the area.
I'd love to see Irish survive and thrive but things don't look
good. The incessant deadlines missed, the worry for the players
every month and the general worry for the league as it's all,
will it won't be?

This is something that I have been beefing about on here for a
long time.
My own club, just a few miles from The Stoop were, a few years
ago, running 5/6 sides. Now it has just got worse and worse, we
just about get one 15 out on a Saturday. How long we can last -
i don't know.
A middle level club, quite near to where I live, - Esher - was
running 13 or 14 sides a few years back. Now it's 3 sides if
they are lucky.
What is the answer? Too many fit young men and women sitting
watching rugby on a Saturday instead of playing? Well, could be,
at least in part.
Solution? Don't know.

Final nail in the coffin owing a cool million. If their
investors have struggled to show how they can keep the club
going, along with Crossan getting fed up with losing money I
can’t see a positive outcome here.

Surely if Formula 1 can be a big sport with the amount of
jeopardy and excitement it serves up, there is still hope for
Rugby Union.

Just to get my head round this latest news. LI owes the tax man
£1 million? Incredible if true. I bet the players and staff did
not know about this-which is a disgrace.
