Sounds like some hedge fund managers want it to go bust so they
can buy for a steal

I just hope if they go broke that the amateur club and training
ground are protected- then there is a legacy and they carry on
If not the club disappears completely

anyone else think the sport is dying? New rules every season
adding to game complexity, stop/start games with penalties
abound which it's clear the players themselves haven't taken
onboard, clubs struggling financially with no way out of this
mess evident, remember when rugby was fun to watch instead of a
rules imbibed bore-fest?

The sport may be dying from bad management and external factors
but in the last couple of years I've seen some of the best club
level rugby matches in my time as an STH.

I'm not sure I'd say dying (yet).
I think rugby is though sliding out of relevance a bit as a
sport in this country. What I mean by this, is there seems
little to captivate the younger crowd to keep that interest
(whether they are 5, 15 or early 20s). Rugby needs more heroes
in the shape of Marcus Smith who generate that interest, much
like Wilkinson did, as people would attend games just to see
him. The decline of England being a top force in rugby hasn't
helped over the last 4 years either.
With the constant law changes confusing even seasoned
supporters, its no wonder why many would take a glance and go
"Not sure what its all about to be honest, seems a bit
confusing".
The amount of controversial/inconsistent decision making isn't
helping either. With the mass discussions about laws being
wrongly interpreted/applied etc it would be off putting, in the
sense the left hand dosen't know what the right hand is doing.
Whilst I have many solutions and answers on a range of intricate
topics, sadly solving the decline of rugby is one I have yet to
crack.

Sorry Poorfour, I disagree, we should expect something from them
if nothing else to pressure the clowns involved in this takeover
(on all sides) to pull their fingers out.
The other 9 clubs fans have all had to pay their money and renew
season tickets and I don't think it's beyond the realms of
acceptability that they reassure us that we will get a proper
season and enough games to ensure our clubs don't go under. All
this nonsense about no one coming up from the Championship is
not helping, I'd rather have 3 clubs come up and ensure we get a
full roster of games than some a*se about face approach with
those remaining.

Does the prime responsibility for a lot of this not lie with PRL
and CVC? Yes the RFU theoretically have overall say but where
does the power and responsibility actually lie?

It's a good point. Wasps and Worcester became the full
responsibility of the RFU once they'd been automatically
relegated but Irish are still a Premiership team. PRL are almost
certainly calling the tune, even if it's behind the scenes. In
reality the RFU and PRL will be in discussion about it but I'd
fully expect PRL to be leading that discussion.

From what I can see, rugby is in a parlous state in England:
National team: We have one of the largest playing bases and
probably the richest union in the game, so we should be a very
good bet for the World Cup. Yet we came 4th in the Six Nations
this year and no-one's rating our World Cup chances.
Professional club rugby: well: Wasps, Warriors & now London
Irish. Problems with the salary cap and player numbers. We
know that the Championship is troubled too.
Community adult rugby: player numbers have plummeted, especially
post covid. Based on figures in the Guardian in Jan 2022,
player numbers have fallen from 259,600 active adult players in
England in 2016 to 95,100 at the end of the 2020/21 season. I
ref at the lower levels of community rugby and my experience
absolutely bears this out. Clubs that, pre-covid, put out a 2s
and normally a 3s are struggling to get a first team out. I've
been appointed to 5 or 6 games, one after another, on a specific
Saturday, only for none of them to go ahead because of player
numbers.
Youth and mini rugby: I don't have data on this, but have
coached at this level for about 10 years. Numbers appear
healthy, especially at the younger levels.
School rugby: from my observations of a few schools I know of,
previously strong rugby schools can get out a good firsts and
put a lot of effort and attention into it. 1st XV rugby appears
to be doing well. However, there's decreasing strength in
depth. I've seen a couple of schools not in the absolute top
rank of rugby schools, but still with a decent rugby pedigree
(eg Christs Hospital, Worth) who can no longer get a 3rd team
out and are now struggling even with a 2nd team.
I think there are multiple reasons for all of this, such as
general fear of injury, concussion, two tier pro vs amateur
game, confusing laws, rise of other sports etc, but I certainly
wouldn't be buying shares in rugby as a sport.
